Some of the world's fastest horses were
running at Colorado Springs' Pike's Peak
Turf Club on July 8th.The race was the
AMA National ChampionshipYamaha
Gold Cup,128 furlongs (16 miles).
The favorite wasYamaha, with
Roberts aboard. But some racing experts
pointed out that Mann looked good on
Triumph, and Harley was at least a
dark horse.
When the dust settled,the scoreboard
. proved the oddsmakers right. The winner
wasYamaha, by two-and-a-half l~ngths.
Yamaha rider Kenny Roberts stretched
his AMA National point lead, and set a
-new tr~ck record in the process.
And as if that weren't enough,Yamaha
won all the rest of the races on the sheet:
Novice,Junior, and Trophy.
When you think about it;it wasn't
even a horserace.
