While Cycle News was somewhat involved in tlte affair, it was no t so that we might benefit from it. Had we wislted, we could have written a muclt more spectacullJr story. Tlte montltlies suffer from a very long lIJg·time, but you may expect a great deal of inlt from tltem on t~e subject. I have personnaly in my own way been envl'lved in a fight against the AMA and ete. But after some consideration I found that I did not really understand the programs that the AMA stood for. This was due to by a great part my lack of knowledge, of the AMA. I now after having become more closly involved with District 36 and the AMA feel that what has happened in the past few weeks could if not watched very closly by the AMA membership by OUT own down fall. The AMA has wi thin the past few yean made some raalistic changes, that where spearheaded by Mr. Russ March. Now along comes a P.O. Clarke did p~tty weD himself. newspaper magistrate and the walls come tumbling down. It seems to me that the newspaper 1 am refering to has had Mr. Younghlood as one of its members. Then when Mr. Marchs so called con'flict of interest ilme.s came up. This same newspaper magIStrates name comes up. Sceenss of the Hurst Newspaper Political Power, Remember! Mr. Russ March I am sure kept the best en terest of the membership in mind when he took stock in the printing concern that supplies the AMA. I am sure that the fees received from this stock was very small There are hundreds of other thinl!s that Mr. March could have taken stock in if he really wanted to make his fortune at the expense of the AMA and its membership. The AMA officers and employees are not the higbist paid persons in the motorcycle field. Especially when one things of all the hundreds of thousands of hours that these employees of the AMA put into the sport while serving our best enterest. I would hope that if we the motorcycling public and members of the AMA allow the news media to con trol our sport and organizations much more that it has already done that we are in real trouble. Now I would like comment on Mr. C(laytons proposals to divid the AMA racing and non-racing). Over 'the past year I seem to remember a number of editorials in Mr. <::Jay tons pape~ that have very slanted VIews concernmg; ORV-lic., land use, pollution, IsDt and any number of other things his newspaper would like the general motorcyclist to believe. Now after all these unusual editorial a final blow that recomends division of the only National motorcycle organization we have to date. Only of late has the AMA become the power that can f'Jght the battles that face us. Now Division? Divid and Cone our, I ~aIly wonder which side Mr. Clayton and his newspaper are really on. 1 know that Mr. March cannot be reinstated, but' if the general motorcycling public and members of the AMA want to save what rights we have left we had better stick together. React now and see to it that the AMA is being run by the elected officals, and th~t they or the AMA policys are not bemg swayed by the news media no matter how rightist they may seem. ' ALL COULD BE LOST! BRUCE C. YOUNG Dirt. Diggers No. MC Roseville, Calif. Mr. Marclt did not resign; Ite was fired by a unanimous vote of tlte Executive Committee, tlte membersltip of wlticlt, we are sure, took into .. consideration aU tlte past good that Mr. Marclt has done for tlte Association before malting tlteir decision. Perhaps tltey had information tltat led tltem to believe that Marclt was getting more than "very small" benefits from Itis connection witlt tlte billing company. Any benefits of tltis sort witltout tlte prior approval of the Executive Committee are grounds for dismissal on a conflict of interest basis. Your aUegations of a CN "power p14y" are a little too absurd to reply to Fascism Lives! Harry Oxley, who p resides over two of four SRA sanctioned race tracks, has proven it. In his role as chief executive officer of the Speedway Racing Association Harry has repeatedly watched out for Harry the race track operator, it's sort of like !'aving your cake and eating it too, isn't It Harry. WeD, in typical jack-boot tradition, Harry has attempted to stifle competition with his personal race track. Ole Harry, with his own best • inte~sts foremost in mind, saw that the Orange County International Raceway was refused an SRA sanction. "1'00 Close" to Harry's Orange County Fairgrounds. It just didn't matter that tIiis callous disregard for the riders meant that many of ·them were relegated to permanen t 2nd and 3rd division status, and that they had to scramble for rides each week, hoping for a spot out of the goodness of some promoter's heart. Of course, Harry protected Harry's profit, riden or no riden. Now it seems that those few desperate or enterprising individuals who did exercise their "Unalienable Rights" (Thomas jefferson said that, Harry, it's in the Decleration of Independence) by riding at Orange County International Raceway must be e1iminated. Maybe Harry thinks these riders don't measure up to his Master Race Standards. Keep it up Harry maybe Orange County will let you ·build a concentration camp on the fairgrounds. At very least you'l make dictator of tlte year. TOM CASTOR SRA No. 59 Stanton, Calif. Tlte AMA found that trying to do tlte same tlting ran tltem afoul of tlte 14w in California. It seems that. tlte riders can go to tlte courts...Ed. We Need Smog Facts We need information to fight pending legislation. JOE ROGERS Yamaha of Arizona 13023 N. Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, Az. 85022 Absolutely Pointless I presently own a '72 Ossa Pioneer and a '63 Vespa. Both of these machines features a pointless ignition system. If such a system was available in 1963 ~hy is it considered a majo; Improvemen t in engineering technology to have a pointless system today? You really ought to do a road test on a Vespa. They are very smooth and quiet and require. very little upkeep. A colorful brochure is enclosed to brighten your day. TONY E. MARCHMAN Westminister, Calif. As B.ad as They Look Either john Ulrich can't read or he has a guilty conscience. He knocked Harley·Davidson spokesman Nick Hirsch for the latter's correlation of appearance to odor of some motorcyclists. I fail to see how Mr. Hirsch's comment stereotypes motorcyclists when he "",d the word so me. I work part time in the parts dept. of a Harley shop. I agree with Mr. Hirsch,
