CMC at well prepared Saddleback By John Bethea ORANGE, CAL., AUG. 19 Doug Sherman and Gaylon Mosier wound up tied on points in. today's 250 Expert class, and it took Doug's fmal race win: to act as the tie-breaker by CMC rules. Doug's first performance on a CZ ended wi th a fourth behind defending CMC champ Mosier (Mai), Bruce Baron (Yam) and Rich Pinnick (CZ). But, then, the entire picture got jumped around and produced the tie in .the nex t race. Sherman scored the heaIthy win while Mosier, who had moved up to fourth once, slid au t and fell bac k to ninth. He spent the rest of the race regaining ground and soon before the checkered appeared, returned to fourth to finish behind Jeff Vidic (Mai) and Randy Myers (Bul). It was still good for second overall, and Vidic's and Myer's first race finishes were better than Pinnick's and Baron's second.. Bruce McDougal (Pen), as was Tim Lunde almost a month ago, wound up the week with the neat sweep in 125 Expert action. He won Wednesday and Thursday nilthts, took second Friday and retumea to the winner's circle today, the 22nd time this seasOn. I t was abou t as close as you could normally get to a tie without really tying. Works-Monark Bamey Blume ended with a fourth and second while Bruce had a first and fifth. Blume's factory teammate, Marty Smith, wound up the unaware spoiler in Bamey's reported final appearance in American before returning home to Sweden. Marty won the final race, bu t together with a 19th in round one, his total was not as important's as Blume's. Bamey finished second, bu t if he had won, could have won overall. And, if he had, Smith would still have finished fourth overall, nothing gained and nothing 10sL That error upon the part of pitmen to clue Marty cost Blume his desired farewell victory. Mark Tyer (Pen) tied Blume on points in the rmal tote, bu t the best final performance gave the nod to the Swede. Rex Staten (Mai) and Jim West (Hus) resumed their daytime battles in the 500 Expert, and again Rex proved to be the dominating factor, but don't discredit WesL Staten won both rounds and West .took two seconds. In the rmal, for example, the pair had diced so hard that by the time the checkered appeared, third place Rick Long (Yam), from Northern California, was three.quarters of a lap behind, more than a minute. Fourth overall, Luke Messer (Mai) , . took third in round one and seemed well on his way to nearly keep pace with the forerunners when he, like so many others, retired when his brakes went nuL Four three-moto sweeps occurred today on the finally prepared Saddleback turf. In fact, the course was so well taken care of by Bruce Faver, Saddleback's track Super-intendant thatmany riders and spectators made a pain t to comment favorably to CMC Officials about it. Only one of those three-far-three showings came in the Intermediates. Brad Lynch (CZ) went out of his way to make it terrible for the fellow 250's, including Jack Phillips (CZ), who is nearing the Expert role. The other three .came in divisional race among t1]e Juniors. In the 250 I, Kim Marsh (CZ) did the deed to Charles Richardson (Yam) and in 250 II Mike Gillman (Yam) aced Richard Sciuto (CZ). Top brands changed in the 125 III where John Smoot tipped the hat-trick toJoho McGonigal (Pen). Mike Tripes (Han), younger brother of the SuperHowl' winner, wants desperately to join the pro ranks and he came a lot closer today by whipping the 125 Intermediates easily over Tom Devore (Ric)_ It was his fourth Inter win this season. Topping the 500 Intermediates was Albert Ortiz, who is also seeking to join his Maico riding pro brother Allen. It was his third Inter victory of the 1973 campaign, and it puts him on the very verge of the transfer. Don Laverty had a difficult time edging out Bob Welch in the race for the 100 Junion big brass, but he did and led a Hodaka sweep of the top three slots rounded au t by Rudy Sayers. Apparently adept at both day and night racing, Dan Loros (Pen) barely missed a sweep in the 125 Jr. II, while equally adept Nick Roberts (Han) smudged a possible down.to-the-flag scramble with an eigh th in the rmal race to take second. Robert Garcia (Yam) had to hassle Steve Potls (CI) in the rmal two 250Jr III motos, won them both, but still had little trouble collecting the overall win. Both Mike Burkhardt (Mai) and Mike Hernandez (BSA) had troubles in the 500 In., and it ended in a toultht scramble for the win in the end. The matched first and fifths in rounds one-two, then placed one-two in the decider, won by BurkhardL • all members ON! 71\.Viket. . Fer Invrtuilon 05 a s~to..~r or- c.ontes+o.n-t: : write: p.O.
