Wow, t. up.
Jim West took til, ..eel end held it in the second molo.
CMC Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, CAL., AUG. 12
It's a shame that the Jim
West/Rex Staten confrontation
didn't last longer. In their fIrst
encounter here on the
International GP course, Rex blew
everyone in to the weeds, including
West. When the checkered flew he held
a comanding 25-second lead over the
Husky works rider, who in tum led
third place finisher Luke Messer by 45
ticks.
The final was, however, totally
d Hferen t. Jim gunned It to the
immediate lead with Rex a second
behind. For three laps it remained thus,
promising an eeker at the fmish. That's
precisely when Rex's Maico blew a rear
wheel bearing. West rolled off his
second Sunday 500cc Expert win in a
row.
Messer (Maico) clung to second
which was enough to bump Staten out
of the runner-up slot.
The defending CMC Number One,
Gaylon Mosier (Maico) had his overall
win tain ted slightly when Doug
Sherman (CZ) barely edged him out of a
sweep by winning the final moto. A
third in the first moto for Doug spelled
the difference ahd Myers, with two
fourths, was there for third. A
disappointed Billy Clements (Hus) feU
in the late stages of the last race.
bashing his chances at third after having
place second in the ftrst race.
CMC daytime's leading winner this
season, Marty Smith (Mnk), added the
eighth notch to a win record in the 125
class by topping both ends of the
confrontation. Doing a nice bit of
move-up riding was Darmy LaPorte
(Pen) to talte two seconds and second
overall.
Mark Peters.. (Mai) a regular at many
of the CMC Southland lDC'etings despite
residing in the San Francisco Bay area,
collected two trophies for today's riding
and one came for a flTSt in the 250
Intermediates which he swept. His other
was scored in the 500 Int. in which he
t>laced a solid third behind Bill Shepard
(CZ) and Albert Ortiz (Mai).
Greg Lersch won both ends of the
125 In t. on his KTM/Penton. Although
he tallied only a fifth in the mid-round,
but it wasn't enough to dip him out of
the overall poin ts accumulation. Second
went to Jim Felton (Pen) who added a
third to his pair of seconds.
Only one Junior, Tim Marsh (CZ)
made things click in all three motos as
he swept the 250 Jr. Div. I ahead of
Jack McCormic.k (Yam). Ed Kubota
(CZ) and Mike Hogan (Hon) took the
other two divisions.
John Smoot (Hon) won the fmal two
125 Jr. II races to claim that class while
Rich Winkleman (Hon) scored a
tWOo'one-two to take the first division.
Bob Welch (Hod) did likewise in the
100 Jr. in his first day race of the CMC
season.
Consistency paid off for Mike
Burkhardt (Mai) in the 500 Jr. His three
seconds narrowly out-pointed Charles
Dickinson (CZ), even though he had
won the final two races. His first moto
seventh, won by Mike Hernandez (Hus)
made the difference.

CMC Irwindale

IRWINDALE, CAL., AUG. 10
For the second night in a row the
same riders scored wins in CMC
nighttime action. Bruce McDougal
(125-Pen), Randy Myers
(25().BuI), and Luke Messer (50().Mai)
were the victorious, but none was able
to sweep.
McDougal, the winningest pro on the
CMC circuit this season with 19, added
a thirl! to his two wins and allowed
Chuck Lunde (Hon) to gain undisputed
hold 0 f second overall with the final
moto win.
The 500 was a thriller as Messer
and Jim West (Hus) entered the final
race with a first and second each. What
transpired dralned- the crowd, of
remaining emotion. West made a
fan tastic ride to chase Messer down to
the wire, only to fmish second in the
end. Jim has been making a strong
return to SoCai motocross domination.
With the memory of the wicked spill
a week earlier lodged in the back of his
mind, it took Buttons Sadler (CZ) the
flTSt moto to really get unwound again.
In it he placed seventh, but bounced
back and won the final pair of 500 Int.
rounds to claim the win from Dave
Hensche (CZ), who won the first race.
Bill Pincon (Mon) made yet another
appearance in the 250 InL win records
as he held Ted Hamner (Yam) at bay in
the second round and coasted home the
winner in the third although Ted scored
ftrst.
Vince Van Hook (Yam) has becorn<:
the man to beat in the Mini Bike class at
CMC under-the-light shows. He started
with an eventual third in round one, but.
came back to top the other two.
Pon tiac Fry, upset with past
performances from his machinery so it
shall remain nameless, found himself in
the front of the line in the 500 Jr.
regardless of his misgivings. It was a
through-the-backdoor win as he had a
second and two thirds.
The other Junior f;0rtions were final
affairs. Joe Aragon Yam) got another
100 win, Rick Ott Bul) did it to the
125 's and Dave Pptts (CZ) headed the
250's.

he finally got going. Dave won and Billy

third-second-frrst showing was just two
points away from the overall win.
Larry Allen (Suz) edged out Robert
Aslund (Suz) in similar fashion in the
125 InL The' fmal tally: 969 to 925.
Even closer was Jim Lee's 250
