Ascot "There is no such thing as an Unbreakable !-ever" * $6 .•. But this one comes dosest. The Ascot Experts and Juniors ' ,met head-on Friday night in one of the best combined class shows this season. The Juniors now have .c ...o ... 95 .... Rick Hocking has been grabbing most of the headlines this year for the junior riders, and he well deserves most of them. But others have been riding better and better without the benefit of the backing received by Mr. Hocking. john Hateley topped the list in the time trials to give the Experts their one and only moment of Final glory. From them on it was the West's best junior half-milers putting on the show, with the Experts acting in the supporting roles. Ha teley tried another of his come-from behind rides in the Heat race and lost to Danny Hackie. Point leader, DeWayne Keeter fmished third. Then Rick Hocking jumped into a quick lead off the line, in the second heat, and built a lead that no one could match. The thIrd Heat found Rex Barratt wig-wagging his way to the win over Expert Larry Gino. Brian LaPlante blew a last lap lead in the final Heat, and gave the win to junior Mike Clarke; who was riding his best-ever. Keeter had to flash his usual goo<;\ form with a perfect start in the Semi to win one for the Experts with juniors. Mike Renslow, Bob Sanders and Randy Bailey ran in the next three spots. Sanders edged Bailey at the line for third on a split decision by the officials. Two Experts and two juniors made up the Trophy Dash, and it Was Rookie Brian LaPlante doing one of his famous fly-through-the-air acts again. This time the machine did three flips, with LaPlante crashing for the fifth time this year. He went end over end and landed on his feet. The bike was wiped out for the night. Hocking went on to win on the re-start with Barratt second and Hateley pulling a third plac.e, after winning the previous week. The start of the big bike Final looked like a Rookie preview for next season, with Barrat in first, Hocking second and Hockie running third. It was close from the start, with Hocking edging up on 'each lap until the two were side by side on laps four through "seven. Then Hocking dropped out on lap eight and Danny Hackie took up the chase. The Barratt-Hackie duel then went side ·by side through lap twelve, with Hateley again pu tting on one of his famous last lap bids to run a close third. The last two and a half laps found the: lead changing five times, wi th Hockie taking it back going in to the final tum for the win on the Dirt Bike Magazine sponsored Yamaha that is tuned by Veteran, Dick Kelm of old BSA Gold Star fame. The early laps of the Novice Final were much like the last laps of the big bike Main event. Bruce Hanlon was on top with Skip Aksland trying for the pass. • The two were inches apart on the third and fourth laps, but Aksland ,got by to the inside on lap five and went on for his fifth Main event win of the season and closed the point race on Tom Berry, who is slated to retum to action this coming Friday. Randy Miller came from a second row eighth place starting spot to run a closing third before the laps ran out. .. M M < N .,; ".
