LOUIS .~ eye Ie (7.14) 893'70$7 7219 Westmjnst~r'Aye~ It was one of those weekends when everything needed for a good'desert event just seemed to fall right in place. A rare summer rain had put the lmishing touches on the desert, and a large field of riders showed up to make for a very competitive event DRA Hare and Hound. The course was two loops of 25 miles each, offering a variety of riding that was enjoyed by all. The first loop was fast and wide, with an occasional hill or two to let the riders string out before tightening up close to the llllish. The second loop was just the opposite, with a lot of small washes and tight trails winding up and down the hills in the Fry Mountain atta. "Great course", "really a lot of fun" and "I've never seen a better marked course", were just a few of the comments passed along by the lmishers. The starting line was a mixture of both D-37 boys and DRA guys. Bob Riley, current point leader with QRA, brought the troops around for both loops, witll a unchallenged lead that he picked up before the first check. The banner went up at 8:30 am and dropped sending the Novices, Amateurs and Experts out on loop one. Heading East in a relatively smooth start area, the course headed up a small up-grade to the bomb and around the left of a large black hill, about six miles out. At the hill it Was Bill Saltzman in the lead on a 400 Husky, with Bob Riley also on a 400 running second and Greg Hawks really wringing his 125 DKW out to the max, Holdinll down third was Paul Greenwood (Hus). Mike McElfresh (Hus), John Fisher (Yam) and Jack Orndoff followed to the right or left of the trail looking for a dust free way to go. Glendale. CA 91,208 ... LUCERNE VALLEY, CAL., AUG. 5 Westminster Ca.' Rounding the mountain and beading for the llrst check it was Riley in the 'lead, and Saltzman was out with . mechanical problems. Riley started stretching it out, finishing the first loop with a smile ear to ear and a two minute I ead. Second rider in was Mike McElfresh on a 450 Husky, With John Fisher not far behind on a 250 Yamaha. Jack Orndoff was holdin" down fourth, and "Uncle Gus Paull' was sliding around in fifth. While the Novice, Amateur and Expert were running the first loop the Minis were given a treat by havin~ the second loop all to themselves. (That must have been what I ran over on the second 100p... Ed). Imagine the feeling: you're nine years old, making it along across the open desert. and the only other riders around are a bunch of little guys like yourself. Neat it was, with the exception of a group of non-entered riders who were out joy riding. This same group was stopped once today and told to say clear of the course, as the lead.ers were due any time, by DRA official Ron Burpo. Once out, of sight the group evidently got back on the course and proceeded backwards. (That must have been it... Ed) Allen Whitney was leading all the way around on a SL-70, when he was suddenly greated I by this group and was hit by one of them, bending up his Mini and costing him the win. At the lmish Whitney pulled in a little beaten and shaken up and said, "Hey some guys with District plates crashed into me .out there." Fortunately, Whitney was not seriously hurt, but going backwards 011 the course while a race is on is so dangerous that I can '.t say enough. I only hope that the view they were looking for was worth the chances they were taking. Anyway, not all was lost as Kevin Bailey pulled in and took llrSt place honors in the Mini's race on a SL-70, followed by Allen Whitney on a'XR-75, with Bob Bence in "for a third on a SL-70. . The Beginners, who had a separate start, were finishing their first loop, with· Allan Gillum on a 250 Honda Elsinore in the lead, followed by John Wilhoyte (360 Yam) and John Steen (XL·250 Hon). Kirk Kandt (250 Yam) was running fourth. Chris Johnson on a , 125 Monark was the only small bike running in the top 10. The second loop was quite a bit different from the llrSt one, sweeping out in a Northerly direction from the pits heading out into a variety of hills and short washes. This loop had seen a10t 'more rain, as there were muddy sections and moist spots along the trail. I t wound along through the washes and valleys, over a couple of hills, and I grabbed a wash heading back towards the pits. The cloud of dust approaching the ,lmish was the leader, Bob Riley on a I 400 Husky. Riley pulled in first overall . for the second time in the last five races. His remarks about the race and coursewere all favorable, ''had' a great time, the only time I saw anyone back there Was on the last of the second loop." Second overall and llrSt 250 Expert was Mike Cummins. Cummins was really cookin on the second loop, as he moved up from sixth to second. Great ride Mike. Joining the winners circle and picking up his bottle of Champagne, was third place finisher John Fisher. Fish was first 250 Amateur aboard a Yamaha. Pulling in fourth was Jack Orndoff riding a 400 Husky, and picking up second place in the Open Expert class. Gus Paull was f"tf th and third Open Expert on a Yaroaha. First Novice toc;lay Was John Sands on a 500 Yam., second Novice was Dennis Klein aboard a 450 Husky, and Woody Schamel was first Open Amateur, riding a 400 Husky. That makes two firsts in a row for Woody. Tim Ritter had a good ride today taking first 250 Novice ahead of Bob Taft. Ritter, on a Bultaco was able to stay ahead of Taft's Ossa, leading around for both loops. Glen Finley took first 175 Novice. Mike Delaney turned in a nice ride on his 125 Penton and picked up first place with Tracy Lyon (Yam) pulling in second In the 100 class it was Chuck Pettigrew who was battling with the big bikes, lmishing thirteenth overall and picking up, llrst 100 Expert on a Harley-Davidson. Mike Bednash, (100Yam) took second place honors in the Expert class. In the 100 Novice class it was a battle for llrSt place between Stan White (Hod) and Ray Mark, riding a do-it·yourself model combination of a early-Greoves out of the sixties and a Baja·Harley for a power plant. It was also a battle of the ages, as Stan is under 16 and Ray is into his 40's. The end result was that Ray Mark led the llrSt loop and got off first for the second, • but Stan hung in there and picked up the llrSt pla"e, with Ray Mark taking second. In the 175 Novice class it was Mike Ekardt taking first on a Bultaco with Don Hudson (17 5 Yam) finishing second. The Beginners are coming in hot and heavy now, with Allan Gillum still in the lead on his 250 Honda. Allan had it in the bag today and led the race all the way. Allen picks up,a first overall in the Beginner race and his transfer to the Novice class for his efforts. John Wilhoyte (360 Yam) was pushing all the way but had to .settle for a second. He still picked up first Open Beginner, though. Report is, John has one more ride as a Beginners, so be looking for John to be risht in there at the next race. Following John Wilhoyte wasJohn Steen on a 250 Honda, placing third overall and second 250. Steen would be the one who might prevent. Wilhoyte from getting his first overall. Finishing up the Beginners were Mark Hillingsworth (360 Yam), Mike Martin (360 Yam) and Patrick McEvoy (450 Hus). Chris Johnson was first 125 Monark and ninth overall. Gary Hicken was first 175 on a Suzuki, and Mike Lewis took first 100 honors on a Hodaka. Leslie K1ug was a happy girl. today. She Was delighted with the course saying, ''The race was really neat. We had a lot of different types of riding today." Different types of riding must agree with Leslie, as she fmished a very impressive 36th overall and taking first Powder Puff. Not to shabby. Could be that Leslie is trying to gather points to qualify for the Silver Cup Invitational, which is scheduled for September llrst. Results: OVERALL' 1. Bob Riley (HU5)' 2. Mike Cumm.ns (Yam); 3.
