.. i III Laguna Seca Sidecars ~ Q. M .... Cl> - U which was sponsored by the Southern California Side-Hack Association and the Al\1A, turned out to be an unofficial West Coast Championship run with riders from British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California. Saturday's practice gave the teams a chance to look at the track and spectators a taste of what was to come. As the machines lined up for their Hexhibition" on Sunday, the crowd waited. On the front row we had Vic Hudson/J ack Hart (pilot/passengerr of Vedder Crossing, B.C., Canada, on a 750cc Suzuki. Vic & Jack had just returned from the Isle of Man where they had taken a very respectable 33rd (out of 98 entrjes) on their first attempt there. Next to them were Glenn Newton/Don Springer of Portland, Oregon, on a 750 Anteater Triumph. Rounding out row 1 were Bob WigginsfWendell Beard, also of Portland riding a 500 Kawasaki The starting line was alive with the hum of engines and, although this was billed as an exhibition, there was no question as to the authenticity of the race when the starting flag dropped! Dean Hummer/Rulon Gulbransen (1000 H-D) flew in to turn l, picking their way around other bikes until at the top of the start hill they were in first. Coming around to the end of lap 1 they were still in front, followed closely by Jim McNeal/Sky_ Kerley (750 Norton), Newton/ pringer (750 Tri) anq Larry Coleman/Wendell Andrews. Jerry Jarman/Johnny Gervais (750 Hon), who had also gotten a beautiful start, had been again plagued by some problem. They had pulled off the course, fixed the source of irritation, and returned dead last. Lap 2 ended much the same as lap I except thal Ross & MiJlje Clunis had moved their 700 ·Triumph ahead of some of the slower machines and Jarman/Gervais had ·maneuvered their Honda into seventh. Then Coleman/Andrews moved into third just before Hummer/Gulbransen modified a cylinder and had to drop ou t, turning tbe lead over to the charging l\1c,,!ealfKerley and moving that little 500 in to second. Electrical problems caused an unscheduled pit stop for Rod/Bob and Jarman/Gervais moved into fifth. When the Canadian Suzuki broke a cbain, Jarman/Gervais moved into fourth with a long run at third. On lap 8 they turned in the' fast lap time for the day and captured the th.ird place slot, pressing even harder for the distant 500 Kawasaki still holding second. We don't mean to slight McNealfKerley or Coleman/Andres by all this talk about J arman/Gervais, for they were riding a spectacular race and as they began to lap the slower machines - weaving in and ou t of traffic - they were even more spectacular. And when the checkered flag came out there were streaks of yellow (McNeal/Kerley), white (Coleman/Andrews) and blue Uarman/Gervais) all trying for that last ounce of power that would earn them the coveted trophy and the right to say, ''We're the best in the West!" But, they'l have to defend that statement in September at Portland where tbe California boys have been challenged to mee tHan home ground." - - ~ ) Fant85tic ~atiun all tile way to 8000 RPM.
