Self, who gets fair starts most of the time, now works by riders with superb ease and confidence. Ron showed good skill also by winning both 250 and 500 Senior motos. Len Macchiarella (Mon) and Mike Middleton (Mai) were just a few of the riders he had to contend with in the 250 Senior class, not to mention a host of over enthusastic Intermediate riders. Self took -the win with ease in the 250 class but had to work for it in the 500 Senior moto. Jon Dieu (Yam YZ) was the rider Self had to con tend with in that race, bu t using patience and skill he overcame Dieu for the win. Paul Turner (~uz) from Woodside had an interesting problem. Paul had won his first moto in the 125 Junior class but his rear wheel began to come apart towards the end of that ra.ce and things looked bleak for Paul starttng the second moto. Paul was in luck today as his Mom had borrowed a Suzuki rear wheel from the good folks at Jensen's Cycle. With the new wheel Paul took the win in his class and now will be looking f9I the win in the 125 Intermediate class. RESULTS MINI: 1. Roy Seiber (Hon). 2. Chuck Foster (Hod). 3. Neil Snarr (Hon). Smith Hustles Black Plates By William Spencer LOOl, CAL., JULY 20 FREMONT, CAL.,JULY 21 Mark Smith continued his domination of the Black 'Plate Scrambles with two wins at Fremont Raceway on Saturday night despite not having gained one point the night before at Lodi Cycle two ways: the large turnout and the fantastic racing. Just before practice started, 83 entries were signed, up and the success of the day was assured with 58 little bikes starting out the morning's runs. It was of no surprise to see the Dave King, Rod Simas Penton take the early lead, but by the same token it was also no surprise to see Troy Durham take over when the King Penton faltered. Durham rides the two hour even t~ by himself and seldom fails to make it out of' the top three and usually wins. Today he had his hands full of Chal DeCecco and Jeff Cole on a Cycle Imports Suzuki, and, although he finished on the same lap, he was nearly a half a lap back. Not bad for a two to one effort. Slipping into third after a bad tumble and 'bike problems was Scott Austin/Dave Rosenquist team. They haa been running third for abou t 12 laps at the half way poin t bu thad problems that put them back to seventh and they did an excellen t job of making up the time. The same goes for the King/Simas team who dropped from third to 14th on th.e opening laps. While they pretty much considered themselves ou t from that point, the hard charge to the front paid off leaving Eric Jones/Steve Butschy team fifth and Reggie Kittrelle sixth after having spent most of the even t in third. Reggie's lap chart showed the energy crisis at its worst: the last 20 minutes saw him drop the three spots. The best action of the day came in the 250 with off ro ace Neil MacDannald showing up on his trick Elsinore. Neil led the early standings of District 36's Black Plate Scramblers but had to retire from that circuitt when the Mark Smith and his wonder Yamaha continued their scrambles streak. I
