Rick'Woods and Mike Bast had their first solid meeting of the year at Irwindale. Bast came out on top. SPEEDWAY:ยท The week that just sid by Ventura Mike Bast came back to Ventura after that bad crash last week, and showed everybody that he was little the worse for wear. Mike At Costa Mesa Ken 'Super Stop' Cartee did his thing again in front of Sonny Nutter. worked his way into both Mains, winning the Scratch Main over Bill Cody, Mike Konle, and brother Steve. Ken Cartee (Supct' Stop) did his thing again. He came in just a little faster than his ability would allow and carne to a stop just long enough to cause Dan Becker to get off. He got the transfer spot and went on to the Main event. Ken won the Handicap Main event, but it was not the most popular win of the nigh t. The Second Division Main went to Rick Smith, who comes all the way up from the San Diego area to ride. Rick has been riding well for the last several weeks, and is ready for a shot at division one. There were the nonnal amounts of falls, though most were very minor and required no outside assistance afterwards. Mark' Cherry looped it on the line, and Mark Cherf did the same thing in turn number three. On the oIber hand, there were more guys doing 180s or spinning around than we have seen in some time. This can be atmbuted to a different racing surface for the past few weeks. The track has been very hard with little or no cushion on it, but this time there was a lot of loose dirt along with a lot more traction than the riders were expecting at Ventura. BakemHlId And Bakersfield saw the most complete and wild pileup in a-long time. Don Green, no releation to this reporter, got his [ust big win at Bakersfield this season in the Second Division Main, outracing Dean York and Tim Jim Parisi. Fresh out of Second Division was Mark Cherf, who found himself not only in First Division races that evening, but winning and working his way into the Handicap Main event. Adding to this time effort, the young racer got out in front of (and held off) the likes of Steve Bast, Steve Gresham and Dubb Ferrell all the way for the five lap victory in the Handicap Main. During the Handicap Consolation there was a pileup to end all pileups. Bill Gray had gotten off by himself at the back of the pack and came to stop at _ the end of the front straightaway. The infield man was having trouble getting the bike off the track., and as the riders came around tum three and four it was apparrent that he had run out of time and would have to drag the bike to the infield.
