riders came flying into turn one, th,ey found the infield man under the bike he had worked so hard to remove. A t the last minute he tripped, just a foot from safety. Scott Sivage was in the lead and was the fJrst to run into the bike. Then came Mark Cherry with no place to go but ovef the top. Next it was Mike KonJe, but he got past the mess, only to have a flag man step in front of him. Mike turned to avoid him, but there was no time and the flag man took off running.. .in the wrong direction! He ran right into the path of KonJe, and they both went end over end as Mike's bike destroyed itself against the crashwall. The fans wer~ horrified and the infield people were stunned at all that had happened in the last two or three seconds. When the mess was cleaned up, there was little or no physical damage done to anyone. Just a few minor cuts and a lot of hurt pride. The big loss was of the monetary type...bent frames, wheels, ripped leathers and broken bikes, but everyone walked away ready to ride the next race. GOse.d CIl C1. Solid Steel, Right Shape, Right Price! Write Today. Irwindale Thursday nigh t at the biggest of the speedway tracks, Irwindale, we found Mike Bast doing it to current national champ Rick Woods in the Scratch Main event. The four lap race was the best run between Rick and Mike So far this season. A t no time did the champs get more than three feet apart. Mike stayed on the pole as Woods worked to the outside, trying to get that little bit of traction that would carry him to the lead. It was not to be found, though, and as Larry Shaw held off Danny Becker, Mike came around for the last lap and the checkered flag with Rick right on his tail. Ken Cartee got his second Handicap, Main event win this week. If he can keep on winning and lose his habit of stalling in front of the rest of the pack, I will have to think of a new nickname for him instead of Super ·Stop. Ken is starting on the ten yard line after winning three Handicaps, and it's time to add some yardage to his starting position. It.95 t970 NEWP'ORT -.V COSTA M.sA, CA. (714) e4e 2270 MOVING? COsta Mesa The unbeatable Mike Bast set one more record this past week by winning every Scratch Main even t for the four nights of Speedway racing in the southland. Mike was last year's U.S. champ, and every time he rides against the current title holder, Rick Woods, you know that it will be the best race of the night. This Friday in the Scratch was no exception, as Mike and Rick changed lines going in' and out of the turns, but it was Mike coming out of every turn rJrst, and beating the U.S. champ to the finish line. I had been giving some though t to changing Ken Cartee's nickname of "Super Stop" to something else, because he has been winning Handicap Mains with some regularity. However, Super Stop did his thing at Ventura, getting Dan Becker off, and then again Friday while he had the lead. He pulled up short in the turn again, causing Sonny Nutter to eat the crashwalJ. Sonny must be getting used to it by now, though. Last week it was Woods who put him out of the first even t. Jim Gresham, older brother of Steve, has made a rme comeback after his crash at the Pacific Coast Championships last December at Ventura. Jim was laid up most of the winter and got a late start this season, but he seems rme and we should see more of him in the winners circle. Jim won the Handicap Main event for his rJrst big win of the year. Troy McKee came from the back of the pack to pull off the win in the Second Division Main for the second straight Friday night in a row. The Bast Boys are on the road again, heading up north not to race, but to watch. On their recent trip to the northern tracks they won every event they were entered in, with the exception of two. All the tracks they appeared at asked the Brothers to return and pu t on a school. Both boys are interested in seeing the sport grow, and they feel that if it will make the racing safer and faster, they'd like the chance to pass on some- of the schooling they received here in the U.S.A. while world champ Ivan Mauger was here. .. .
