., Cl> N production or On the way. So do Honda and Kawasaki. The added inches wouldn't hwt Norton, either, although they seem to h ave an very compe ti tive motorcycle on short tracks as it stands. Finally, it would give Harley a helping inch or two. The only way that a four-stroke seems to be able to win at the moment is if somebody parks Cal Rayborn in the driver's seat. Even Calvin is getting tired of being out-horsepowered, and rumor doggedly main lains that Yamaha is going to have a new rider next year. But four-strokt:s seem to improve with morc piston and they might have a chance with a litre or so. My main concern is that American racing not get taken over by some big, unavailable, unfamiliar, too-fast motorcycles, even if they are the products of superior engineering. Tbese proposals aren't guaranteed to keep Yamaha from taking over (they still may introduce a 700cc street machine), but they give the privateer a chance, they don't make presen t equipmen t obsolete, and they keep the hope alive of occasional victory for someone else.. .Art Friedman ANTONIN USED MOL y* MARTY USED MOL'Y* M .... !!! The tumout was quite good for being the weekend after the end of the series, but the regulars that have raced the en tire series were all but absenL All tbe Experts ran together today, and Jim West Jed them all. The only trouble Jim hM was in the second moto, when Kevin Young slipped by for half a lap. But then and never more that day was West topped. Content to stay in second place Open, third overall, was young Jeff Szueber, mounted on a YZ Yammie-Ha. Usually running around fourth overall was Leonard Mellgren on a 125 Suzzie. There certainly wasn't any prejudice towards cC-5ize in this moto. Overall, West won the biggie sized bikes, with Szueber second, while Young took 250 class, with flashy Eddie Coulter in second. A tip to all you photographers out there, if you want neat pictures, simply point a camera at Coulter, and he'll do it for you. The Opens also ran together, and did th y put .on a show! In the IITst moto, Jim Beltnick pulled an early lead, only to be passed by Craig Adams. ButJames did not want to give up that easy, so he pushed his old body on, but could not catch the young speed demon. So Jim gave up, and settled for second, then in the second round, Jim's bike quit all together thus one Jim BeltDick packed it up for the day, but he still held on to third place. First and second turned ou t to be Ernie Apodaca and Fred Nelson, respectively. What happened to Adams, you say? It turns out that he was an Intermediate, and he won his cq.ss, with Bob Cope second. While all this foo-faw was going on, Gary Stokes, the only Senior riding today was sitting back, having a good day. It seems that last week Stokes bOught a slightly used Ake.replica Maico, and has spent all week shaping it. He even stayed up into the very wee small hours of the night, last night preparing it, and still the compression release leaked (which was later fixed by jamming a plug into the )lole). But the problem was that Gary had never ridden a Maico, let alone his new bike. So the first two motos he took it easy, bu t in the third, all hell broke loose. Off the line Gary was second, and he captured first by the end of the IITst lap. By the end of the moto, Gary held a commanding lead of about 100 yards. Wow! Just wait until he knows the bike better. • II a.. Marty Tripes 1st Again Superbowl - July 7 Join THIS Growing Gallery OF Winners!
