I discovered long ago, that the only persons who escape criticism are those who do and say nothing. This applies equally to writers and to those in public life. Even one's best intentions will draw the wrath and condemnation of those who hold opposing views. Certainly' the observation by one of ~the writers of a letter to Cycle News is in error, at least where I am concerned. I gladly gave you an interview because I thpught that your questions and my answers to them would be of interest to your readers. I also was glad to lend my assitance to your journalistic efforls because I thought that the views of elected officials and appoin ted officials would be valuable to your readers. Having known you long before you began writing for Cycle News, I believed that the objectives of your articles would serve a most useful purpose and I hope that the criticism which you have received will not deter you irom that purpose. NO GREG all rights reserved 1" HOLIFIELD TO ULRICH I have always dreamed of being a part of the industry of motorcycling. I had the pleasure of being introduced to Mr. Dave Ekins, and I would have been more than happy to just accept a hardy hand shake and be able to pass it on that I had the privilege of meeting someone who I always thought the world of. But Dave is more than just a great ·rider. He gave me my flrst chance to be a part of the sport by giving me a spot in the magazine he cre~ted. Since Dave bas been relieved --of his position on the staff of "Dirt Rider" Magazine, understandably I will no longer be conuibuting to "Dirt Rider Handbook" which Dave had given me sole responsibility for. It shows that as of this date Los Angeles Coun ty has received approximately $ 70,000 of in-lieu tax m 0 ney from 0 [f.road veh icl e registrations. Incorporated cities within t/le county have received a similar amount. We urge all off-road vehicle enthusiasts in this area to write to their city councilmen or county.supervisors and request that this money be sct aside in an off-road vehicle fund as was the intent of the legislature when the off-road vehicle registration law was passed. The name and address of your local councilman or supervisor should be available from the local League of Women Voters who are listed in the phone directory. MR. & MRS. CHARLES A. SMITH Altadena, Calif. Dear Mr. Smith: Thank you for the recent letter from yourself and Mrs. Smith seeking information on the in-lieu tax mo!'ey which Los Ang(!les County has receIVed. The last disbursement by the State Controller's Office was in October of 1972 and· covered the first three months of the registration program, July through September. At that time Los Angeles County. received 123,973.55. This amount is just for the unincorporated portion of the County. In addition to that money, the 77 -incorporated cities within the County received a total of 127,288.61. The Controller:S Office informs us that the next allocation will be made in mid-July, covering the months from October, 1972 through June of 1973. While the amount of each disbursement has not yet been computed, it is estimated that is would be somewhat less than twice as large as the to tals for October as indicated above. RONALD D. RAWLINGS . Park and Recreation Specwlist I've fOt a Yamaha GTI 80 that's a month old. When I went to get it she told me (my Mom) that it has to be street legal. So I picked out a Yamaba Enduro 100 racing bike and she said it's too big. And I'm S'I" tall. So I get the Yamaha 80 and DOW she won't let me even take off the tum signals to race. What do you think? , .MIKE RAMOS Kamath, Calif. Tell Mom that if you don't remove the tum signals to race, they'l get broken off... Ed. THE REAL DAVID FULLER Whc:re Are You David Fuller? Will the real David Fuller who rode in EI Trial de Espana last December please write to David Fuller in Canada. David Fuller, 3483 Hutchison Street, Montreal 130, Province De Quebec, Canada. VIC CONAWAY Westerville, Ohio ~l1tin' ..... _ ~ by Charles Clayton Would you welcome, please... Whether you noticed or not, Cycle News has a new Publisher, a person whom I have known over twenty years' and one that I can assure readers has the highest qualifications for the job. "What does a publisher do?," you may well ask. Webster's defmes "publish - to declare publicly. To make generally known" and "publisher - 1) a member of the 'jehovah's Witnesses sect who is expected to devote at least 60 hours of his time to propagation of the faith on a door-to-door basis. 2) Owner and operator of a newspaper." Sometimes the dictionary is not much help, for the new publisher is not in any way connected with the jehovab's Witnesses. She is a brought-up Monnon, though she occasionally takes beverages stronger than Sanka, actually. "Owner and operator of a newspaper," okay. That's Sharon Clayton. But what does a publisher do? A publisher is to publish, right? So, back to the Iexigraph ... "Publish - to disclose, make publicly known." That's it. I don't know about other places, but at Cycle News the pub1isher is . ultimately responsible for the editorial content and quality of the paper and for arbitrating disputes between the Editorial and Advertising departments. She has to be able to collect and spend a million to a million-and-a-half dollars a year to do her duties. We don't burden the publisher very much with circulation or adverti'sing sales, since they are being very capably handled by their departments. In her spare time, Sharon serves as Trustee for the American Motorcycle Association (it would tak.e another column to disclose what an AMA Trostee does.) She knows how to fly airplanes, work computers, ride, motorcycles and cook. She is as honest as Edith Bunker without being dumb like the one on TV (I've got to write carefully here, since Edith Bunk.er happens also to be Sharon's mothe~'s maiden name.) Sharon is rather more careful than I am or ever was, but she·is not afraid to do whatever is legally and morally necessary to faithfully execute her duty to "publish, disclose, make publicly known."
