'" - IRWINDALE Earlier I stated that for the most part about the only damage done to the riders in these spectacular crashes is a loss 0 f a win and a few aches and pains the next day. But Jeff Sexton made a liar out of me Thursday night when he broke his shoulder and wrist in a cross wi th two riders. Jeff has been on a winning trail all year after coming back from a broken back last year. Kirk Alexander was to ride at Irwindale, but could not because he broke his collar bone Wednesday at Bakersfield. With all the spills that go with this sport, you may see why I get on my soap box about the referees who do not go by the rule book. Dubb Ferrell kept his winning streak active in the Handicap Main by taking the win away from Bill Meister right at the finish line, almost a repeat of his win last week at Bakersfield. There's no playing around when Rick Woods and Steve Bast are running for the big bucks. It's just all out and bead to head combat. Rick won this battle, but there are many more nights left. Bruce Penhall made it back to back wins in Division Two Main Event. Bruce won Friday nigh t at Costa Mesa then again at Irwindale, and if he keeps it up, they may start getting some smaller trophy girls. Then he won't have to stand on hjs tip toes to kiss them. An overall look at the nigh t looks like this: Good fast racing on a track that could use a little work. About half way through the night the surface started to break up and was the cause of several riders getting off. The 23 even ts were run in good orde.r with the exception of Jeff Sexton getting burt. The starting gates malfunctioned, but the flag starts went off with no trouble. & ~ ... ... He wanted to write the story from the viewpoint of the riders, so he decided to do it: Randy Riggs became a rider for a night, and found out how hard it is, and how hard the ground is. Randy did not give up afte~ a very unimpressive debu t; he was back Friday night to give it another go. Riggs not only stayed up for the whole race, but came in third, and that's not to bad for his second ride. One day soon we may see a match race between Riggs and John Weed a staff member of the other weekly motorcycle paper. John has been at it a few weeks longer and has a few more rides than Randy, bu t I think Randy has been sneaking away at lunch time to practice. The third division is where it all starts, and that's where you pay your dues. If you last, you'll be in second division, hoping for the wins that will give you the poin 15 to move to the big money in rust division. The half way poin 1, second division, has some of the most ferocious competition on race night because the riders have learned how to go fast, but they are not sure of what to do with the speed. Troy McKee knew just what to do with the speed in the second division Main event for the win. Troy worked his way in and out of fallen riders and out rode the rest to take the win. The first division was not without it's ups and downs as Dall Becker lost it again in a gian t wheelie coming ou t of tum 2, ending up halfway down the track. The Tustin Honda Handicap Main event pulled together the top six handicap riders of the night for their final go. John Fishburn got his rust big one. of the year as he outran Dubb Ferrell and Billy Gray, both pre-:ious winners of this main event. Steve Gresham, the little man who has been getting off so regularly at Bakersfield, stayed on board in the Scratch Main event. He held off Rick Woods, Don Cullum and Mike Bast in what would have to be the ~ght of the night. All four riders stayed bunched up all through the Olce and it was anybody's guess who would come out the tums first. Steve took over the lead in the third lap for the win.
