(Continued from page 25) half of that second moto until he bogged down on the uphill. Jim Turner took over from Payne and then was claimed by the hill, too. Plumb was out to claim first in the third moto, as he broke away from everyone at the start. But then, the new· found Kawasaki pilot, Bill Grossi, charged past Plumb on the outside of the last tum. Grossi, who seemed to have so much trouble getting along with the Kaw in p.ractice, really worked out the differences. Billy Payne, looking for a comeback after the dismal second moto, got too enthusiastic and met was very fast and a pleasure to watch. Admittedty. the course markings at the end of the long straight. It was far too late by the time they got his wheel un tangled. Bob Harris adopted. his position and kept it until passed by Mark Blackwell (Hus) in the final laps. Robert Plumb's 2-3-2 finish gave a comfortable overall to the Salt Lake City, Plaza Cycler. By virtue of 7-2-4 finishes, Bob Harris, from Windsor, N.Y. got second. And, Californian (about time) Mark BlackweU was third. None of the top five overall had a moto victory. Too many crash and bums? It was an all-around good show at the Coliseum. Noone seemed to feel that they had wasted their money. For five bucks (That's less than most National Motocrosses.) you got a place to sit rather than an indefinite chunk of hard ground. Though you may have been a fair distance away, you could see the whole thing happening. True, many of the subtJetie's of motocross disappear unless you are close, but 'tonight the racing was exciting enough to make up for any of that. The Oldtirners and the sidehacks added a few more thrills and/or joUies to the scene. Marty Tripes proved that his last Coliseum victory wasn't a fluke.
