ORA Hare Scrambles ADELANT~-tAL., July 1 - Take a 19 year old d sert rider and stick him in boot c for three months then sit back and e what develops. What developed w Rich Mark taking top honors in his graduation program and sporting the only set of Dress Blues at the exercise while everyone else wore Dress Greens. Another thing that was developing for Rich was a strong case of those Husky blues. Husky blues are cured by throwing your leg over your Husky, grabbing a bandful of· throttle and blasting through the pucker bushes in the desert. Rich did that too and in the process of shaking off those blues, he picked up top honors at the desert Suoday, taking first overall in a hare scrambles hosted by Desert Racing Assoc. The course was in th.e Kramer Hills area, and from the comments we got)it seemed to have all the ingredients ot a good desert course. Leaving the start it boon-docked out in the desert four to five miles and then twisted and turned itself into a roller-coaster sandwash where riding the wall is so much fun you wan t to turn around.go' back ,and do it again. Then throw in a couple of hills, a short fire road, another wash, some rolling hills, a section of whoop-de-doo's that kept you on your toes, across some more open desert down another short wash and cross country back to the pits. The race started at exactly 9:30 and at the smoke it was J obn Fisher, last week's winner, aboard his 250 Yamaha, followed by Ray Lowe (Yam) who was really ringing it out. Jack Orndoff, 500 Yamaha, was pushing hard and running third. followed by Rich Mark, 450 Husky, and Roy Knight, 250 Yamaha, was holding down fifth. Fish was really getting with it when he blew a tire. At the first check Jack Orndoff had moved up to second, only to develop mechanical problems. Rich was running third and Uncle Gus was moving towards the fast moving fron t rimners. Three quarters of the way around the first loop Rich Mark and his 450 Husky had just taken over the lead and was really looking good. Rich led into the pits and was passed by Ray Lowe while he was pitting. Third man in on loop one was Uncle Gus and Mike Cummins was righ t on his tail. Mean time, while the frontrunners were swapping places and really getting into the race, the beginners had started and also were starting to take shape. At Rich Marks Takes ... '" • ORA Desert 1 ... Close behind Rex was Pullin, Hollingsworth and Warr. Lavern Garton had moved up considerably and was becoming a threat or at least someone to keep your eye on. Moving back to the Nov/Am/Ex race it was time for. our overall winner to appear at any time. The course was 27 miles long and the first lap had taken 40 minutes. It was now time for a leader. It was 41 min utes on loop two and Rich Mark came charging in to the finish. Rich was Husky mounted and took lust overall and first Open Expert. When asked about the race Rich remarked, "This. was my first race with ORA and I though t it was great. I particularly liked the start, it was. perfect t.iming, no getting leg cramlls wai ting for the banner to drop. 1 liked the danger marks too they were spaced good and .marked to read the degree of danger. The course had enough variety and 50 plus miles was long enough. You can get a winner in 50 miles and it's easier on your equipment." As Rich's 450 was being pushed into the winners line.up, Uncle Gus was pulling in for a second overall linish. Not bad, since Gus had to work his way up and he's no youngster. Mike Cummins on a 250 Yamaha pulled in third and first 250 Expert. Cummins only remark. to his win was "Boy, what a workout." Roy Knight was next followed by Ray Lowe. Jim Irby was six·th overall and first Open Novice. Jim also turned in one good ride as he was counted back in the 30's at the first check. Wally Weatherwax, a celebrity among the Novices, rode pie plate Expert today and got fourth 250, seventh overall. Hangin there. Wally. Rouoding out the first start, Ken t Fyfe took first 250 Novice on a Ossa, Tracy Lyon took first 125 on a Yamaha and Craig Fogwell was first 100 on a Hodaka. With all the winners sitting around hashing over the race, cooling off with their ch ampagne and getting their pictures snapped, the excitement was just starting to cool down when Bob Pullin, 25'0 Yamaha, pulled in overall winner of the Beginners race. Bob got a hardy congratulations for his win, a bottle of champagne to celebrate it with and a automatic transfer to the Novice class. Next rider in was Lavern Garton for second overall and first Open.
