NIPPLE NOTE
Last week you wanted to know why
Pierre Karsmakers wears band-aids over
his nipples. 'Cause when he races his
jersey rubs against his nipples, therefore
causing them to get very raw and
sensi tive. Ya know, wearing band-aids
isn't all that uncommon!!

SENSATIONALISM
I work in the motorcycle industry
and am aware of the problems it faces in
the areas of s"fety, environmental
compatibility, and governmen t,·
regulation, to name a few. The May
cover of "AMA News" and the june
cover of "Cycle Guide" use the full
color photo of the unfortunate Mark
Brelsford/Larry Darr mishap at
Daytona. It is my opinion that this kind
of emphasis on incidents such as this,
particularly by motorcycle publications,
could generate serious, damaging
repercussions for enthusiasts, the sport,
and the industry from governmen t
organizations and public groups, to say
nothing of the impact it has on the
general public.
In your position as an editor of a
motorcycle publication, and an
influential in the industry, I am asking
that you continue to consider the full
impact of your editorial policy and
decisions on the entire industry. While
inclusion of accident photographs in
articles is probably good, objective
Voices
reporting, I do nQt feel that
sensationalizing the same material on
the cover is within the kin of
journalistic professionalism. Motorcycle
enthusiasts, the sport, and the entire
industry can only gain from the exercise
of professionalism by influentials such
as yourself.
Thank you for your time and
considereation of my opinion.

THANKS TO THE FANS
Thank you once again for the
excellen t coverage we received in
CYCLE NEWS for the Hang Ten United
States Grand Prix. I know it helped our
efforts enormously.
To the thousands of people who
attended our race, our sincere thanks
for cooperating with us in the running
01 the Grand Prix. This first World
Championship Grand Prix was very
important for America and its being a
success depended on the people who
came to see it, not so much from a
financial point, but from the point of
general safety and behavior. Our getting
of the
West
a date for 1974 and approval to run
depended to a great exten t on the
people who came to see the race.
The people seemed to sense the
importance of this even t and responded
with generally good behavior and
orderliness and heeding our appeals to
keep the track clear when racing was in
progress. Although we had installed over
20,000 feet of new fencing to try and
combat the crowd problem, we knew
that ultimately the decision rested with
the crowd and they didn't let us down.
They showed great respect for the riders
and marshalls and kept the track clear,
con tributing greatly· to a good day's
racing and to future Grand Prix's. As a
result of the success of the Grand Prix
we have received confirmation for next
year's Grand Prix. This will be run july
14, 1974.

MAD ABOUT THE LAD
The "King of Fools" that wrote the
"Know Your Enemy" column in your
june 26, 1973 newsletter is an insolent,
argumen tative, geek! I saw him there at
the Sierra Club Symposium. I heard him
too. Next I hope I get to see him bike
into one of the open pit mine shafts we
haven't fenced yet! That is, if he knows
how to start one.
We know who our Uenemy" is, and
by the most it isn't the Sierra Club
members at their Symposium.
Thank you for lis tening. I surely am
mad about it.

In reply, John Ulrich says: ". suggest anyone
interested contact Martin Prisco of the BLM
as an impartial observer. Ask him if this letter
is ridiculous or not. No doubt about it. This
woman is mad."
