GO • 1 M ~ g > .~ ~ Z w ..J (J > o Rayborn, Rice and Romero finished their heat in orda<, with Gillespie in fourth. away in the next tum and l';cked himself in to the fron"! slot for the next twelve laps. Gillespie hung close, with Dave Sehl right behind and Jim Rice and Gary Scott trailing. So it stayed. until Rice began to lose power and drop back, retiring from the race after eigh t laps with bottom end trouble. Scott and Romero moved into fourth and ruth, both moving mighty fast. Then Scott drifted out in a tum, letting Romero and Castro truck on by. Then Castro lost his line and Scott moved back up as Romero overtook Sehl and moved in to third. Scott was by Sehl on the next lap, and both Team Mexican and Team Rookie were hookin' on the heels of Gillespie and lleauchamp. Then it all seemed to start happening faster: Scott goes by Romero, then around Gillespie, then Beauchamp! Romero catches up, then loses traction and falls back as Castro blasts by behind GiUespie and Beauchamp. Then it's Beauchamp around Scott! The fans are becoming totally berserked: the weak of heart and the heavy of bladder are struggling to con trol their nervous systems. as this shifting eight-wheeled, four-headed assembly blasts by at 100 plus miles per hour. Beauchamp falters, and it's Scott and Beauchamp led the first half, but went wide and wobblV in turn 4 and the traffic came through. GiUespie into first and second, with Castro and Romero moving up. and Dick Mann coming on! Five laps to go: Romero, on the wick, charges on Gillespie, with Castro ana Mann following suit. Beauchamp drops . to sixth, and Romero is by Gillespie! It's Gary Scott and Gene Romero, trading off the sligh test advan tage. The roar from the stands begins to drown out the noise of the engines. It's pure _ gut-screaming excitement down to the wire as Scott and Romero come by and into the last lap, slight margin to Scott into the tum. Romero pulls up into the straightaway, side by side, each with a fuU twisted wrist lock. Romero pulls out slightly gaining the smaU advantage in the last tum and diving for home. The flag is out and it's over with a long exhale from the fans: Romero, Scott, Gillespie, Mann, Castro and Beauchamp. Talk about a mile. Who would'a figured it. Romero. Whalta race. Gary Scott was fast qualifier and nearly won, but was Burrito'd on the last lap. @ 1'73, CIRCL.E INDUSTRIes, RESULTS: 1. Gene Romero tTri). 2. Gary Scott (Trl/. 3. Frank Gillespie (Trl). 4.
