DUST BOWL, UTAH, July 1 - The Inter·Trans-Arama kicked off this weekend just outside of Cedar Fort, Utah, A more beautiful place would be hard to fmd. Manning Cycle Park lies in a canyon above green fields found on postcards. Above it are ragged moun tains still capped with snow from the Heavy winer. Unfortunately, few of the above Were visible in the vicinity:including the still kicking Inter·Trans·Arama, Just as they did millions of years ago, the seas advanced to inundate the area. But, for 1973 they came in the fonn of dust. The dust did a more thorough job than the mother of Great Salt Lake could have. dreamt of. Nothing floats on dust, t:xcept more dust As some oDe said, "When spectators wear goggles"." Though many of the rumored Europeans did not try out Salt Lake, the cast was stilI interesting, Pierre managed to find his way to another one, this time to ride a 250 Yamaba. Heikki Mikkola brought a 250 Husky. The Honda crew brought Gary, DeWayne, Marty, and their new addition, Rich Eirstedt. That European kid, Jim Pomeroy, even came. John DeSoto had a factory-looking CZ (you qn tell' for sure by the red frame). There were Runyard and Thorwaldson Suzukis; Grossi, West and Gang Huskies; and Weinert and Macia Kawasakis. Another Euorpean dropped in to keep Pierre's Yamaha company, Christer Hammagren. There waS a host of others too long to mention. Oh, that Lackey kid came, too. All of them headed out to do 40 minutes of battle only after having the 500 Support class prepare the track. About half the crowd won the bets when Heiki Mikkola tossed his Husky into the Hrst comer in front of everyone. Kannakers and Jim Pomeroy followed inter·mixed with the local Plaza Cycle guys demonstrating their course know how. But the end of the n rot lap the trio had separated themselves from the rest. They ran in tight formation leaving hundreds of yards between themselves and fourth place DeSoto. Gary Jones held fifth but turned more green each lap from the flu he had been fighting all week, Pomeroy breathed down Pierre's neck, then dove underneath in the first comer. Jim was wired and after Mikkola. But, it didn't last. Jim slid out, Pierre came back by, and third was where Pomoery stayed. About half way Gary Jones gave up the chase, and Brad Lackey moved past DeSoto for fourth. Jimmy Weinert kept them both in sigh t. Then Marty Tripes, who had been cruising in about twelfth, began to chaJ:&e. In the last twenty minutes he moved relen t1essly through to sixth, but right on DeSoto's wheel. Meanwhile, something happened. 'Either Heikki grew tired or Pierre found an unparalleled burst of speed. In two laps he moved past and'out of sight of Mikkola. Pierre fled from everyone, seeming to go more quickly each lap. Forty dusty dingy minutes ended on a unceremonius note with positions unchanged. The dusty, rocky, bumpy track deteriortated further for the second moto, as water trucks managed to help but maybe a twentieth of the circumfrence. Before the cloud engulfed the valley, the red and silver Honda of Marty Topes flashed into the first comer twenty yards in advance of Plaza Cycle's John Plumb. Brad was third and Pierre fourth, Tripes sped to a 100 yard plus lead on lap one, while Pierre took care of Lackey and Plumb. Then Pierre broke from the pack and took chase. Though they both stretched an incredible lead from third place Lackey, Marty was managing to stretch his lead over Karsmakers even further. It was too good too last, though, The . pounding being delivered to the Honda finally snapped the expansion chamber bracket and in a few laps took the brake cable and the right shock with it. To give you an idea of the extents of Tripe's lead, Marty stopped to have his pipe wired on and was passed only by Karsmake·rs. Of course, the wire broke, and Marty motored slowly around looking for a rmish. While Pierre motored a quarter of a lap in front of everyone, Brad Lackey held off Pomeroy for second. Lackey's higher placing in the final moto gave him second overall, Gary Chaplin turned in a rme ride for fourth place and Mikkola and DeSoto followed. A consistent Jimmy Weinert kept them in sight for seventh.
