Sunday Only SUBSCRIPTION ADVERTISEMENT by Ron Schneiders RED ROCK CANYON SIERRA CLUB COUNTERATTACK Last mon th I reported that a suitable compromise solution had been reached on the question of Red Rock Canyon. At that time there was an Assembly Bill in the works that wol,lld 'have modified the State Park Law eliminating the restriction on motor vehicles imposed by the phrase, "ingress, egress and parking." The bill, even at that time, was not as open as the California Recreational Trails Committee would have liked, but it seemed that a reasonable compromise had been worked out with the Sierra Club. At this month's meeting of the California Recreational Trails Committee it was announced that the Sierra Club has done it again. They have managed to have the bill changed in committee to reinstate the original words. The bill now contains nothing of value to motorcyclists. Mr. Robert Meyers of the P arks and Recreation Department stales that the Sierra Club did "at least 90% of the lobbying" on the bill. Motorcyclists did less than 10%. Since this bill has been stripped of those portions that are important to cyclists, while many paragraphs of importance to the Parks and Recreation Department and the Sierra Club remain, it seems to me that our best course of action is to write to congressmen and ask that they not pass the bill in its presen t form. Ask them to pass no bill relating to State Park Law that contains or allows to stand the damning phrase "ingress, egress and parking," used with respect to motor vehicle operation within the State Park system. What is called a "dummy" bill has reportedly already passed the Senate because it now contains nothing of interest to anybody. If, however, 868 is defeated in the Senate, it is planned to tack the amendments onto the dummy bill and route them through the Assembly at the last moment. Advise your congressman of this plan as well . and ask him to vote against it should it com~up. Since the Sierra Club lobby seems to be in full swing on this matter and our own lobby is non-<:xistent, I have little hopes that 868 and its ghostly counterpart will be defeated. It would take a whole lot of Ie tters in a very short time. If the bill should pass, our rights to use motorcycles in any state park will, under the best of conditions,. be entirely at the whim of whatever State Park official is in charge of that particular park. To save Red Rock Canyon specifically (all State Parks are affected by AB 868), our one remaining hope is to have it classified a State Recreation Area instead of a State Park. The Classification Hearing in which the fmal decision will be made will be held on Friday, July 13, in the auditorium of the new State Office Building in Los . Angeles. The hearing is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Come prepared to speak.
