Long Beach, Calif. 90801 I First National Championships for Minis by Vic Darilek OLYMPIA, WASH., Ju",e 17 - Straddle Line Park was the scene of the first Natbnal Championships for tbe AMA's new Youth Division called the YAMA. Y AMA recognized no Experts for the first great mini shoot-out, even though many Expert class riders showed up for the event. Guy Outland, Youth Division Manager, explained that since poin ts on a National basis have only been awarded since April 15, 1973 no riders qualified on a poin t basis. The first three places in any Junior class races were declared to be the first recognized Experu in the U.S. Rain by the buckeu plagued the track for three days before the event then it really rained for' the racing. The mud was so bad that parents were grabbing the wrong children as they came off the track. Outland set a hard test to find the first Experts. It was to be a test of boy and machine. Colisellll And we have. ah!. some winners. were run in each class. Many of the "hot" set-ups didn't show because they were assured that there would be tear downs for the first three place winners. This was not a contest to determine wbo could build the fastest bike, but rather a contest of rider and machine to allow even the poorest boy a chance, dependent upon his ability with a "stock" bike. This also allows for manufacturer's trophies for cycles available to any boy from a showroom floor. The first run for National points and number plates by Sunday had been dubbed "The Mini Mud Moto Ch ampionships". RESULTS, Q·60cc JUNIOR: Won by Jerry F»alrn (Tora). O·60cc NOVICE: 1.
