Go ANDOVER, ENGLAND, June 10 Norton.VilIiers Ltd. announced today that their full factory road-racing team of John Player N ortons will be coming to the United States for the Kawasaki Superbike International at Laguna Seca, July 27, 28 and 29. The factory team is sponsored by John Players Ltd., the British tobacco company who also backs the Fonnula 1 John Players Special Racing cars of World Champion Emmerson Fi ttipaldi of Brazil and "Superswede" Ronnie Peterson. The announcement of their visit here came after the team had amazed the racing world with a record shattering victory in last week's Isle of Man Fonnula 750 IT. In that race Peter Williams and his teammate Mick Grant raced to a convincing one, two vic tory at an average speed of over 105 MPH and Williams clocked a fastelt lap of 107 MPH 'round the 37% mile island circuit on his way to victory. Only two other riders have been 'round the island faster, nine-time world champion Mike Hailwood on one of the legendary Honda 4 cylinder GP bikes and current world champion Giacomo Agostini, on his MV. Norton Villiers. also announ~ed that this would be the only appearance of the team in the United States this year. This announcemen t concluded several months of negotiations between Trippe, Cox Associates of San ta Ana, California, the promoters of the Kawasaki Superbike International, and the Norton Team, which were begun during the John Player Trans A tlan tic Trophy Series held in England over Easter. The N orton team of Peter Williams and Dave Croxford will be bringing their special monocoque chassied racers to Laguna Seca under the watchful eye of team manager and fonner Grand Prix racer Frank Perris. The beautifully built and prepared machines, finished in the striking red and white colors of their sponsor, use an updated version of the Norton Commando engine, which does not have the horsepower of the Kawasaki and Suzuki Superbikes. However, the team feels that they wiJI have the edge on handling at Laguna Seca, one of the few American tracks that bears any resemblance to a genuine European circuit. This was proven conclusively in the recent Transatlantic Trophy Series when the Norton's superior road holding and air penetration helped it to success against the U.S. opposition on their quicker two strokes. In this series Peter Williams and hjg John Player Norton upheld British honor by winning more races than any. other rider and he tied as top point scorer in the series with American team member Yvon du Hamel. This perfonnance contribute!! greatly towards England's win in the series. The Norton team will arrive at Laguna Seca for the Kawasaki Superbike International on July 27, 28 and 29. full of confidence and the kn owledge that they will be on even tenos with the quicker, bu t less manageable two stroke multis and ready to renew the Transatlan tic battle with the mighty Suzuki . and Kawasaki factory teams.
