ASCOT GARDENA, CAL., June 22 - Half of the Expert Main event riders were on the ground in two separate crashes before the race was finally completed tonight. The FIrst start saw John Hateley going up over the back wheel of another machine. Hateley fell off, and another rider's machine missed his head by inches. The second re:start again had Tom Horton up front early but Hatdey in front on the second lap. Then Ron Powell, Ron Moore, Horton and CharUe Thielke went down in the south turn. Powell was the first rider down, and Horton's machine went over the tOP and flipped through the air all the way to the fence. Moore's machine was right behind. Powell lay in the middle of the track until the race was stopped, then jumped up and walked all the way acrOss the infield to Tom White, one of the riders who was not involved in the crash. First reports were that Powell slugged White, later it was determined that he swunlS and missed. The machines of Horton and Moore were pushed back to the pi ts and ou t of the -race. Moore was taken to the hospital but was relejlSed a short Urne later. Powell was disqualified by acting Referee, Ron Glaskow and was not allowed to restart the race, even though the machine was ready. In the third and last restart Hateley jumped to the front as the race resumed on the third lap in single file order. White, still perhaps dazed from dodging puchnes, was futh at the end of lap three but starting to move. By lap nine White was up into second but a good distance back of Hateley who was going for his third half-mile win in the last four outings. At the finish White was still closing the Van Nuys Triumph but but not enough. Larry Gino was third with Dewayne Keeter running fourth. The Junior action had Danny Hockie way out in fron t in time trials. The Carson rider also won his heat race over Rob Morrison and aI Peluso. The second heat featured the two top Juniors, Rick Hocking andJobn Gennai. Gennai again turned in a near-perfect 8851 South Lakewood Blvd. ride to defeat Hocking, setting the stage for the final. But a costly decision by Gennai, or the lack of it, may have cost him the win. Gennai forgot to designate the outside starting spot instead of the inside. The outside went to Hocking who immediately jumped into the lead and held off Gennai from sLart to finish. Hockie was third all the way and never a contender. Bob Hosford opened the Novice action by defeating point leader Tom Berry in one of the heat races. kip Aksland, Marc Barbani, Bruce Hanlon and Butch Davidson also took their heat races. It was Aksland all the way in the Final with Hanlon doing the chasing. Berry was fi fth a t the end of the flJ"S t lap, six th on lap two, fourth on the fourth lap and fmally ended up third at the finish. Hosford, again riding the only four-stroker in the field, finished up in eigh tho A closing note on the Ascot half mile, iL was agreed by all that the hay bales that were put in a few weeks ago possibly saved Honon, Moore and Thielke from serious injury. The only complaint came from Horton who exploded LwO bales with his body and machine. He stated afterwards, "I could hardly breathe, I had so much hay up under my helmet and in my mouth."
