WAY the pack in the Handicap Main for the second time this month. Nutter's new sponsor and fellow rider is Dav~ Galvin. One rider sponsoring another is not an uncommon occurance in Speedway. Dave Galvin himself has recently been picked up by a very entusiastic female supporter of the sport the very attractive 24 year old young lady and her husband. Through their support they have made it possible for Dave to extend the courtesy to another up comjng rider. The brothers Bast"did the job in the rat h Main: Mike first, teve second, followed by Jeff exton and 'Bast teammate Larry haw. After last weeks rubarb involving Mike Bast over the fact that he did cut to the infield on the start of the Handicap Main event and did not pay attention to the black nag Mile felt that he was the victim of circumstance and filed a protest as I reported in this paper. everaJ people in the Bakersfield area ame to me this past week, and said I was trying to cover up for Mike in my story, and that they clearly saw him cheat. As I wrote at the time the flag was I\ot displayed as written down in the rul~ book, and Mike had to go to the infield to avoid crashing into a ride ... that was (imporperly) lined up in front of him. I may be blind but if so, so is the whole ,RA. board because they saw it as I did, and have dropped all charged of cheating and ignoring the black flag. The results of the race were not changed and stand as reported. IRWINDALE Four times this season Keith Tennis has walked into the winner circle to pick up hjs trophy for winrung the econd Division Main, and for some strange reason he has been over looked for a transfer spot into Division One competition. lt very weU may be that the offi ial score keeper has not had the opportunity to total up all the points accumlated by Keith, and I'm sure that his record will move him into Division One. This past Thursday night looked like it was Wood's time to win. He led the crat h Consolation event all the way to the end, only to pull a wheelie and loop it com;ng au t of Tum three on the last lap. . Both the Scratch and Handicap Main events again went to the Bast Win Machine. Each one won and the other took second. Mike the Hancidap followed by teve, Steve the Scratch followed by Mike. Hal Lawrey alias Honda Hal got caugh t up in a crash that carried him to the wall and later to the hospital with a hroken shoulder. Miling the trip with him was Mark Cherf. Mark passed out after this event on the track, from too much heat and the pain from a twisted ankle that he got in one of three restarts in that event. Rick Woods finally overcame his hard fortune at Costa Mesa. Championship, has been released by his doctor and given the go ahead to return to active competition. Jim has fJlJed his entry form with the .R.A. and just as soon as he can get some pra tice in and feels that he is up to it, will be back on the circuit with his younger brother teve. Sumn,S! McKnight is back in the states for awhile and will be riding next week. Sumner started off riding his season in Europe along with Rick Woods and Scott Autrey. Scott is still competing abroad and unless something un-for-seen happens will continue to ride with the World Champion Ivan Mauger. A look at the record book for this weeks shows t1lat in the four nights of racing. or eight Main events, they were divided as f~lIows: Top Money Maker Mike Bast, two Handicap Main Event wins and two Scratch Main event wins; Rick Woods, one Scratch Main Event; Stave Bast, one Scratch Main event; Steve Nutter, one Handicap Main event; Larry Shaw, one Handicap Main event. ORANG COUNTY COSTA MESA To round out the week of Speedway we take a loa""" at the highlights of the Speedway Spectacular run at Costa Mesa. Rick Wo ds did it at long last. The Huntington Beach Rocket and current United tates peedway Champion, rode well all nigh t for the second ume since his re tum to the states. He got into hoth Main events. Mike and Steve gOt into the Handi ap Main but the cratch was all Woods. Woods and rus teammate Ed Williams went up against Big Mike Konle and Stave Bast. After a had start that saw Woods hit the deck along with Williams, they both got up, dusted themselves off, and went back to the starting line to try it aU over. This time it was a differen t story, Rick got . off like a rocket and pulled out in front righ t off the bat and stayed there like the champ he is. Big Mike helped him around. Tum Two once or twice, with a little push to the rear wheel that I am sure Rick -would not wan t, bu t this is what Speedway is all about. Some Behind The Scene Scuttlebut • This past week of peedway was run without Danny Becker because he was injured in a car acciden t last weekend and was hospitalized for several days. Dan is on the mend now and. at last word, will try to be back in the saddle by the end of next week. Bill Cody was on the scene but still has not been released by the doctor to ride, so he worked as a pit man for Mike KonJe, th& rider that he sponsors. Jim Gresham, the rider that was seriously injured at Ventura. last December during the Pacific West Coast • • Rick Newby is the nevv flash in Division 11.
