SPEED by Dennis Greene VENTURA • ~ w Z W ..J U > U Lightning hit Ventura Tuesday night in the Handicap Main event when Lightning Larry Shaw pulled off his first win in a Main event this season. Larry is -one "member of the Bast brothers wdding team but up to now has been the quiet man on the squad. I reported last week that he was getting things back together and that he would be seeing his name in the results before long, In winning this event he out ran both Mike and Steve Bast, his teammates. Mike came back strong in the Scratch Main for tbe wain, with Don Cullum running second to him. Rick Woods made his debut at Ventura, but it was not better there for him than it was at IrwiiJdale or Costa Mesa. It is strange to see our U.S. National Speedway Champ having so mucb bad luck. Knowning Rick this is just a temporary thing, and when it changes to the good he will be giving the fans their moneys worth. A school is being put togcther for just one reason,. to teach the ins and outs of peedway racing. One of tbe biggest names in the hisLOry of Class C racing in the Tweintieth Century is that of Stu Morley, a veteran Speedway racer and a man wdJ qualified to show anyone what they are doing wrong and the fastest way to do it right. This school is just in its fonnative stage now, and if you are at all interested in learning from a pro fed free to give him a call at borne, area code 213-455-1679. BAKERSFIELD HOT HOT HOT, 102 in L.A., 106 in Bakersfield and with leathers on hotter than HELL. The infield people kept the dust to a minimum by watering the track with garden hoses, their riders consumed a record number of cokes and water, and several got sick to their stomaches but nothing can keep them from putting on the fastest race show in the coun try . A new Rick at Bakersfield, no its not Woods but hometown boy Rick Newby. Rick is the newest rider to get into Speedway from Bakersfield and he took tbe Division Two Main after three restarts. In all three starts someOne gof off, and the race was stopped. Each time Rick had the lead. Steve Nutter got a sponsor just one week ago and' it seems to bave been the changing point for' bim. Steve out-ran Do". Cullum was second at Ventura netting him this handy dirt pile courtesy of Mike Bast. Ed Williems is lIbout to di.. under Mike KonI•• rid St... BIIt. Wonder .....t he's look in' at.
