But it was obviously Willi Bauer's day; he had the track and his machine locked in, and perhaps the image of "World Champion" stamped in his consciousness. Only four points separate him from the defending champion, and only three meetings remain in the GP series. Maico has mounted the strongest European challenge, and they're getting close. But the next event is- in Belgium, DeCoster's home. It's shaping up as an exciting fmish to an uneven season. 25OccMOTO 1 Despite the mishaps that befell Jim Pomeroy, Bullaco has their day in the 250cc support class. In the fiTst go it was a close con test be tween Billy Payne (Mai) , Bob Grossi (Hus) and Bryar Holcomb (Bul), a regular frontrunner at Carlsbad. DeWayne Jones and Ken Zahrt were the early leaders, but Payne quickly moved up and got by both of them. Grossi and Bruce Baron (Yam) dropped J ones to fifth as they both closed on Zahrt. Grossi moved out smartly and pressured Payne hard every time they hit the downhill. Holcolm moved in to third.as Grossi fmally out-braved Payne on the downhill and took the lead. Baron moved past Holcomb, then Holcomb got back around as Grossi continued to stretch his lead on the field. Rich Eierstedt moved past Jones into sixth. Payne tried to regain the lead but Grossi consistently shut him out. Holcomb finished third, with Terry Clarke (Hus) moving up to take fourth. 250cc MOTO 2 The second moto saw Holcomb take command, with DeWayne Jones and Xen Zahrt contesting second position. Bob Grossi and Jin West both moved quickly through traffic and went by J ones in tandem fashion. Baron also came by J ones as West overtook Grossi in pursuit of Holcomb. ·Billy Payne was far back in the field, as Grossi repassed West only to watch Bruce Baron outpower both of them and moye in to second place. Holcolmb was on the wick though, and Baron was unable to make up the distance. Grossi held on to third to tie Holcomb in poin ts for the day. day. The overall win went to Holcomb on the basis of his second moto victory.
