Hood Dirt Riders Club, another successful European-style motocross was held today at that Army reservation. The weather at Cmvhouse Creek Motocross Park was a complete turnabout from the normal Texas winter - blue skies, brigh t sun and a thermometer reading of 82 degrees. The racing turned out to be hotter than that. The actual racing began as advertised at noon, with the 100 Juniors bursting through the rubber band starting line. In the first two motos of this young riders class, Dicky Turnbo grabbed the lead with Tommy Cochran a close second. Cochran managed to get it all together, though, and took first plac~ overall. Turnbo netted second. Cochran rode a Penton Berkshire, and Turnbo a Yamaha. Action in the 125 Junior class was both close and crowded, with fourteen entries. Robert Cox of Belton pulled the win on his 125 CZ; two other Belton riders managed second and third - both astride Pen tons. Gary Lawn copped second place honors, and Mark Walker rode to third. Action in the 126-200 class was mostly for first and second places. Two Ft. Hood Dirt Riders, Jon Clark and Ronnie Parker fough t for top honors throughout all three motos. Clark grabbed the overall win on his new Penton 175 Jackpiner. Parker rode hard to second on his stock 185 Suzuki. Butch Lake made the trip up from Austin to take home third place honors with his Yamaha. t'ifteen 250 Junior riders showed up to do battle for the gold. As usual at any track, the class provided for some hairy action. Bob Fiesler of the Ft. Hood Dirt Riders, looked like an easy winner with his 250 Yamaha, until his tl1rottle stuck in the third moto, forcing him out for the day, George Vinson, who had been holding down second place copped the win in the last moto on his Suzuki. Also on a Suzuki, Jerry Whitt took second. Rounding out the 250 Junior Suzuki sweep was Joe Buenneke, Winners in the Open Junior class were Danny Foster of Killeen on a Suzuki; Mike Gravalos second on a CZ and Tim Blanton, nailing third with his Suzuki. The fastest and most experienced Colorado Winter MX Seriesby Max 'Phil' Dawson GRAND JU CTlON, COLO., Dec. 3, 1972 - "Wunnerful, wunnerful", as a wcll-known musical idol of the Geritol set would say. That describes the weather, course, crowd, racing field the whole schmear! Dealers backing the event are also racing in it. Leroy Blackshcar, local Yamaha and Husqvarna man, races 250 and 360 Yamahas in the Expert classes. Carl Koch, who with his brother, Dick, handles Montesa, Puch, and some other WantedlJ\ll A.embers. It must be cold in Colorado. riders were entered in the Senior classes. Once again the uTemple Texas Terror," Brady Booth reigned supreme in the 125 Senior class. He was riding a new 'Monark motorcycle from Steve's Cycle Shack in Temple. Mark Roberts, a recent addition to Austin's Bigley Racing Team, ran a consisten t second place all day on his Bultaco 125. Joe Powers, on a Hodaka Wombat grabbed third place. The 250 Senior class provided the best racing of the day. Steve Stackable, _:_~-~-_:_-_:_:--~--.-~ good bikes, is out there doing his thing in the 125 Expert ranks. Today's race saw a few new faces get into the winner's picture, both in Expert and Amateur classes. Top spot in the 125 Experts belongs to Jim Tatum (Yam) so far, after two events. Tatum used to ride Yamahas, went to CZ and did very well, but now is back on Yamaha without missing a gear. , Starks' Moab buddy, Rocky Erb (Suz) repeated his feat today of the last time in the 125 Amateurs and owns frrst. 250 Experts Rollie Cate and Sandy Harris showed up among the frrst three overall riders again today, to no one's surprise. Cate (Yam) took first again and Harris (Yam) took a third, whereas he had a second Nov. 19. One of the toughest and most resilient cycle acrobats around is Roy Velasquez (CZ), who rides a four-year-old machine, which matches Roy's durability. This tough campaigner was second and third today for second spot 250 Expert. Only one of last race's top three in the 250 Amateurs made it again today. Steve Chapel (ass) scramblcd for a second November 19, and took a third this trip. Gary Beard (Suz) and Ron Odell (ass), who got a first and third in the first series bash, had to move over today for Aspen's Way>le Kleeman (Hus), and local rider Bill Johnson (Yam), first and second. One of the most improved local riders and the major series sponsor, Leroy Blackshear (Yam) had problems with a bent brake lever in the opening event in November, but got it all together today to top the Open Experts, with a one and one. Enough Open Amateurs showed today for a race. Green River, Utah sent Buddy Richardson (Hus) and John Vetere (Suz) east to earn first and third. Aspen sen.! Chuck Bennett (CZ) down to win a second place trophy. one of the area's hottest riders, completely dominated the racing in this class. He won all three motos by a sizeable margin. Gary Bigley (CZ) of the Bigley Racing Team, and Jay Lacy (Hus) had a good race for second place until Bigley finally pulled out triumph an tly. The Open Senior class was also dominated by Steve S tackable. Stackable, who was riding for the Kasson MX Racing Team, has been around Texas motocross racing for several years. The figh t for second place once again involved Gary Bigley, but became a family affair, as Richard Bigley couldn't keep up with Gary and thus was third. San Manuel MX _ by Maxine Morrow SAN MANUEL PARK, Am., Dec. 3, 1972 - In expert style, George Dalber and Sam Redman continues to dominate this fast-moving 1.1-mile track. Daiber was never challenged in 125 motos one and three, but in moto two he had some catch-up work to do when his Pen ton decided to take a rest on the line. Before the end of the first lap, he was right with the pack but could only manage a third place finish. Redman proved once again that he is in a class all by himself with 1·1-1 wins in the 250 and Open divisions. Mounted on his 17 5cc Penton, Redman was challenged only once - by younger brother Paul. In the 250 class, Paul stayed close behind Sam in moto two and managed to sneak by long enough to throw rocks in his face for one lap. A battle for second place was on in all three motos between the younger Redman, Steve Kalasz, Davey Lauver and Boyd Mueller with Kalasz coming out ahead. P. Redman finished with a third overall on his trusty CZ, A three-way battle for second also existed in the Open motos. Ivan Russell, Paul Lax and Richard Smith fought desperately for the number two spot, finishing the day in the above order. In the Novice divisions, Yamaha rider, Jeff Billotte, (250) and Suzuki rider, Bill Hotchkiss, (Open) were out in the desert all alone while their counterparts were running a tight race one-half lap behind. Next month: Watch for Paul Lax to give Redman a tough go-around in the Open Expert class. Lax just switched from a 250 Greeves to a powerful 450 Husky.
