Investigation showed that that particular department had fitted their machine with a different tire tban the standard one wbich was the cause of the wallow. The Guzzi was smooth except for a slight vibration at 30 and, again, at speeds well up there. The only time the brakes offered any problem was in stops at speeds from circa 90 MPH. Tbey were progressive, but required a great deal of pressure. The fiywheel effect caused the machine to tum right slightly at low speeds because the engine was mounted transversely and uses a shaft drive. Both of the other police machines use a chain for their final drive. Low speed stability and a small turning radius made the Guzzi perfect for in-town maneuvering or riding in parades or whatever. The four-speed transmission was pleasant and the rocker pedal, front and rear were easy to get used to. The handlebars have a certain lever effect because they are moun ted to the rear of the steering head. The test machine was equipped with some prototype equipment that may find its way onto the item you can buy. The first hDt set-up was a set of trick muIners which were very quiet but produced a nicely resonant note accelerating. The second was the left grip which could be twisted'dockwise or counter·clockwise to activate the (Continued on page 69) Floorboards on all machines limited cornering. Hanging off helped some. Guzzi handled very well at low speed.
