with a SUItable offer. It was a day of
gre·at hilarity as even my editor tried
bribery. Norm Reeves gave me a dime to
fix up his .score.
As for Dave Ekins, before he started
out he made it known that regardless of
what score sheets came back, the
eventual score should show hi: cleaned
traps all the way around! Most
impressive were Danny Macias and Mel
Dinesen. They don't only tune- 'em;
they can really ride 'em too! Mr.
Goldstar, Jim Hunter, ran out of gas and
then had a fit because all the bikes who
stopped to offer aid were "@*&t%
two·strokes". If you know Hunter,
you'll appreciate that tale. It was a
blast.
On the District level, now that the
rainy season is upon us we are checking
out a rumor that however wet a track
may be,lightweight teward Dick Kouns
will be there supervising things in his
boat. That is if he can get the animals
out of it. Resident fauna of the
neighborhood seem to think it's J\loah's
Ark and the second flood is coming.
We'll see you at the next one. Have
fun but keep informed as to what our
beaureaucratic friends are up to. It's
important and support M.O.R.E.

TURTLE SOUP
Bad Alice! Several weeks ago I
bad·mouthed the California Highway
Patrol for coming- out to the Desert
Turtl.es' race and harassing them. A few
days' later I received a call from
Lieutenant W. D. O'Keeffe of the CHP
wanting to know the officer's name.
Well, I had been out on the course while
all the ruckus was taking place and I
didn't know, but Lieutenant O'Keeffe
and I agreed that the officer's actions
were not a function of the CHP.
Well, (blush) it turns out that the
officer present was one Sergeant
Hag-strom of the San Bernardino County.
Sheriff'sOffice and he was there becanse
the Desert Turtles physically blocked
Harper Lake Road. I also understand
that Turtles moved their cottrse and
only used six miles of the course which
was approved by the BLM. But that
isn't why I'm writing this.
I have always had a great deal of
respect for the CHP. Their officers are
well trained and mostly a bunch of all
right guys and I was really upset to hear
that one of them was a bad guy. I am
happy to extend my apologie, to the
California Highway Patrol. Ana many
than~s to W. D. O'Keeffe; Commander
of the Victorville area, for setting me
straigh t. .

WHITTIER HONDA
~o~~~ ~
The first race of the year will be an
80-mile Hare and Hound put on by the
Vikings M.C. and will be a benefit race
for the widow of Lloyd Cox. Lloyd was
killed in a train accident during Check
Chase this year.
Riders are required to have their
1973 district number plates and current
AMA cards, or no ride. Vikings sure
would like all of you to come out and
earn a finisher's pin and lend a hand to
Lloyd's family.
WOW! SIDEHACKS!
After the Cycle World Grand Prix
last Sunday I managed to get a ride (one
lap) with the winning Honda pilot,
Lorenz Haller. I don't want to start a
mob scene or anything, but next time
you see one of those rigs, beg or bribe

EL CAJON M.C.
. Rumors, half·truths and speculation
run rampant regarding the "outlaw"
desert race in District 38 (San Diego
area) on Dec. 2. Here is the straight
story, acquired from Mark Stevens,
President of District 38.
,Each year, EI Cajon M.C. has thrown
a race called "Coyote Chase", a four
loop Hare Scrambles. This was their
13th or 14th annual Coyote Chase and
they had decided to use last year's
course and run it backwards.
District 38, like.. District 37, has
always tried to work with BLM. We
know there are things in the desert
which we do not want destroyed. But
when J. Russell Penney decreed we must
pay him in order to race, EI Cajon M.C.
got a little hot about it.
BLM sought a restraining order to

In case you don't know it, Husqvama
brought three time World Champion Rolf
Tibblin to the U.S. to head an
International Training Center for
motorcycle racers. Rolf will be head
instructor for an intensive program of
body shaping, mechanics and riding
techniques. It really sounds like a super
school complete with Gym, and after
completing the course, maybe some of
our guys can go out and be World
Champion.
However, all you guys have to wait
until early 1973, while we girls have
convinced Rolf to come out and
instruct a one day "Females Only"
desert racing class. Who knows, by the
time you get around to going to school
we may be beating you in tbe desert!
(Ha!) Rolf insists on a very small class
so each girl gets individual attention,
and already r foresee running out of
entries. Perhaps those of you who can't
get in to this one can help me convince
him to hold a couple more schools next
year. Proceeds will go to Rescue 3.
prevent the race, and the Attorney
General of San Diego called EI Cajon
M.C. and. advised them. Monday before
the race EI Cajon M.C. representative,
District 38 reps and their attorney
attended the hearing, ready to have
,'Law. and Order" rap their knuckles.
Are you ready? The judge suggested a
compromise. The club was all for
getting insurance and paying the $1 0
filing fee, but still refused to pay $1 pe.r
rider or put up the $300 bond for
property damage.
Back in court the next day, EI Cajon
determined not to pay the protection
money and set their jaws to take what
the judge would dish out. Almost
unbelievably, the judge said since the
course was an old one he couldn't see
where the club would be doing any
damage and refused to sign the
restraining order! Whoopee!! So the
club had its race on Sunday, it rained on
Monday and Ot;l Tuesday you couldn't
tell they had ever been there.
However, Mr. Penney's (and Mr.
Nixon's) HLaw" h'ad been broken and
District 38 has been informed that BLM
will bring suit against EI Cajon M.C. for
property damage (?)
District President, Mark Stevens, said
"We co-operate with the BLM. But we
are opposed to Penney trying to make a
law."
District 38 has one club with the guts
to fight. It is going to cost a lot of
money and if they lose, we all lose.
Wouldn't it just be a terrific victory for
Penney if he could legally force the club
to pay up, thereby letting us know that
he has the power and if we want to use
the desert, we play by his rules. So we
have to help District 38 figh t for us.
They have. already given the attorney
a $400 re tainer. They need lots more
money. Send it to:
Special Legal Fund, 1914 Vermont
Place, Escondido, CA 92025. As for
those bones everybody was yelling
about - they were found some thirty
rililes away from the course under a pile
of rocks. Which of you desert racers
would go out of your way to run over a
pile of rocks.
