While following the course, in places, there was both red and orange ribbon along the cou.rse. Many of us got off the course because we made a wrong tum following the orange ribbon instead of the red. It seems to me that if the different sponsoring clubs were given designated colors with which to mark the course it would serve two purposes: LIt 'would make it much easier for the rider while following the co urse to know what color belonged to the sponsoring club. 2. The sponsoring club would be sure to get all his ribbon removed from the course within a reasonable length of time, otherwise all would know which group was littering the desert. I am certain that designated colors would also serve other constructive purposes for the club. They could mark their courses earlier etc. B. DISCRIMINATION: It appears to me that Cycle News is now getting to be a paper whkh passes out propaganda and not facts. The reason I am takinll; this stand is the support that Mr. Schneiders !(ets from this paper whkh allows him to prin t the article he did in the November 11, 1972 issue. I used to take the material that was printed as fact and not as opinion. Now, take a look at not all, but just a few of the statements he made then. He talked about protective reaction raids against the North Vietnamese. He doe, not mention the North Vietnamese naked aggression against the South. He does not talk about why the refugees are moving to the South instead of to the North. He does not mention about how the war would stop and the United States would move out of Viet Name if the North Vietnamese would quit going south and exterminating the South Vietnamese. In other words, if the North were figh ting for their coun try and were the so called "good guys" everybody except the so called "immoral leaders" in the South would defect to the North. An example of how the Communists operate is the Iron Curtain in Gennany. The reason it is still in existence is that 850,00 of East Gennany's most valuable workers would defect to West Gennany. Mr. Schneiders also talked about how Mr. McGovern would clear up the situation in the world. By studying what Mr. McGovern has stated over the past few year, including thi, election year, Mr. McGovern can not make up his mind on any issue that concerns more people than motorcyclist. Therefore, how can anyone expect him to stick by any commitment that he could make to us? As far as Mr. Schneiders' statement on defense spending and people not being able to find jobs after the jobs were terminated, I do not beJieve it. For example, the people who used to make stage coaches had to retrain, sO people in defense industries have to be retrained as our defense needs change. . In fact, I worked as a heli-arc welder on the B-70 for three years. When it was terminated, I took my savings and dropped out of night school and went to college full time. Now I have a couple of degrees in the areas Mr. Schneiders is trying to describe to your readers in I L I VOICES OF THE WEST ...·... - - - - - - - - - - - AND THE AWARD FOR emotional tones that do not give the LONGEST DISTANCE true picture. TRAVELED GOES TO ... At this point I am very confused as May I use your letter page to express to what Cycle News is trying to do. If it my thanks to some extremely. supports opinions and not facts as Mr. accommodating people who made it Schneiders' article indicate" the paper is possible for me to compete in the 1972 then only worth the schedule of the Barstow-to-Vegas Hare and Hound:? races. At this point I see other people My former coUeagues at Norton disagreeing with Mr. Schneiders on his kindly ,et up a new bike and I apologize facts. If his other articles are as for making it so dusty. All sorts of opinionated at the one I am writing people assisted in getting the entry fonn about, he has completely turned me off. into S.an Gabriel before the closing date. Also if the Cycle News supports A charming lady from the S.G.V.M.C. opinionated statements and not the held my tank card at race con trol on the facts, then I will have to decide whether nigh t previous, rather than run the risk the paper is worth renewing my of mailing it to Jolly Old. Bob Jarred, a subscription just for the race schedules. good guy and friend took me out there I h ave tried to wri te this article in his van and seemingly supplied a several times, but as I use examples to million gallons of Gatorade. Lastly, but discredit Mr. Schneiders' statements it starts to look like a book and would not .. not leastly, the San Bernardino Valley M.C. did the pitting with care and be printed. Besides, if I am the only one courtesy. that races motorcycles that believes in Like the man said, "it's only one working for the best interest of all then moto" but I think it's worth the fairly it would not be read. But if the majority long journey. believe as I do, then just a few Y ours in sport statemen ts by me will cause others to MIK.E JACK.SON (No. 148) think for themselves and recognize that Southampton, England we have to use facts and work with the recognized officials. Thank, you for the past reading GIT BETTAH WIKI-WIKI enjoyment. I hope that the paper will. We have just learned of the come back to the point of not being misfortune of Hawaii's own John political and start working with all other DeSoto in incurring such damage to his sporting groups for the best of aiL leg while racing, as to require extensive GERAL YARBROUGH surgery in an effort to repair t)1is Boron. Calif. damage. The entire motorcycling community of Hawaii is saddened and Analogies and references to the Viet Nam would like to take this opportunity to tragedy and other countries' political systems wish him a very speedy and complete strike us as irrelevant to the problems of recovery. American recreational motorcyclists, which is Hawaii is proud to call this yOung what the article referred to is all about. A man their son. He has been instrumen tal statement by a Presidential candidate to any in creating incen tive and ambi.tion in special interest group is news. Commentary on such a statement is opinion, all shades of many of our young people, here in which find a forum in Cycle News. The M.I.C. Hawaii Nei. He has contributed and M.O.R.E. are striking testimony that enonnously to the general public's motorcyclists can no longer afford the luxury acceptance of our love, Motorcycling, of being "non-political", or rave you tried to here in Hawaii. Although John has ride on public land lately? .. Ed. decided to make his home in California Never in my life has anything like this happened to me. At this years Barstow-to-Vegas race we had made reservations paid in full, two weeks in advance. They were to hold three rooms in my name, Ron Hall. After the race Glen Bolenbaugh, of the Antelope Rambler' M.C., Mack Moffatt of the Rams M.C. and myself, Ron Hall of So. Cal. M.C. all went to the motel to claim our rooms and clean up for dinner. When we arrived, the lady manager said there were no vacancies. When we said we had reservations she simply 'handed u, back the money we wired and said that if she had known we were motorcycle people she would never bave given us the reservations. I told her that was discrimination, and that no matter what color we were or who we were, the rooms were paid for and we wanted them. She refused. So we asked for the five dollars it cost to wire the money to her in the first place, and she replied "Just try and get it!" Then she commenced to caU us dirty pigs and demanded that we get off her property. My first though t was to tear the place apart, and it would have taken half the Vegas police to stop me, but not being violent I called the police instead. They only said it was a civil matter and referred me to the Better Business Bureau Which, of course, is closed Saturday. So for the next hour or so we looked for rooms. We got the last three rooms at the Flamingo Capri Motel, and the manage men t was very nice. Then friends of ours, thinking. we were staying at the Yucca Motel, stopped to see us and the manager had the nerve enough to say she threw us out because we were drunk. 'Ie were plenty tired and plenty mad, but not drunk. The only recourse I can see is to infonn the rest of the motorcycle public. and anyone else who reads thiS letter that they are not welcome at the Yucca Motel 1727 La' VegasBlvd.South, Las Vegas, Nevada.... that way maybe none of my friends will have to go through what we had to go through. RON HALL 10c Lwt. Div. II Point Stewart Dist. 37 We got plenty mad just reading about it Boycott Yucca Motel! ... Ed. More letters on p. 9
