"'*"- •.~ . . .,. .. , '*'.. _ by john Crawford/SponpholO VISALIA, CAL., Nov. 19, 1972 Despite several days of rain prior to the Mid-Valley MIG's premier event. this new lub still managed to stage their first scrambles race by moving literally tons of earth off the normal track surface to get down to some reasonably dry dirt. Although some grumbling was heard from a few of the riders, all in all it was an admirable job well done, under very adverse circumstances. Jimmy Mcintyre found the quick way around the track in the 55 junior-Expert and this junior class rider led to the flag, ahead of Expert Ricky Pearce and junior David Yeargan. Dale jones wasn't to be denied in the 100 Novice and was chased, at some distance, by Paul Falvey and Fred Arenas. Roy Sharp picked up the first of his two wins today in the 100 junior. The 125 Novice was all Richard Villanueva from start to finish. jim Conway showed the 125 juniors the swift way to the checkered. Don Andrealla made one of his infrequent appearances on the scrambles scene and made it very worthwhile, smoking home the winner of the 100-125 Expert ahead of Doug Garrison. In the 200 Novice it was Greg Pitts first under the checkers in fron t of Darrell Winter. After chasing Roy Sharp home in the 100 junior, Randy Talley just wasn't to be denied in the 200 junior and bree""d home' the winner ahead of heat winner Bryan Rains. Doug Garrison, who not too long ago was transferred to Expert, showed just how well he has made the adjustment by winning the 200 Expert in a most convincing fashion ahead of jim McAleer and Dave Baker. jerry Crabtree came home the winner in the 250 Novice, well ahead of joe Miller after a several lap battle for the lead. Roy Sharp got his second win of the day in the 250 junior, finishing in front of Mark Tracy and Augie Alves, who has just moved up from the 200 class. Randy Griffith came from behind to pick up a long overdue win in the 250 Expert, followed by Ric Armitage The 250 Experts. Ric Armitage leads Jack Jones (9A), Mart Staab (14R). Tommy Francisco (14). and Wayne Howard (Brand X). and 'Dandy Don' Warren. john Albe got the win i~ the crash-bang, spl,sh-splash 500 Novice, chased by Larry Emerson and Berwyn Qualls. ~lark Tracy received his new junior card today, bul didn't leI the higher class intimidate him in the least as he won the 500 and Open junior class quite handily from Dennis Moore and Rick Zimmerman. Sparkie Edmonston gol probably the besl start of his life in the Open Expert and led from wire to wire on his johnny's ~I/C Co. Beezumph, chased at some distance by new I-1eavyweigh t Champion Lyle ~loore and Bud Wall. 125 Novice Brent Tatum all crossed up with no place to go. '."t-"; .~ Tim~"'Jis by Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL., Nov. 23, 1972 Some say that pace makes the race, and it was surely all pace all. the part of Tom Doty (Hon) who slickered the 125 slarting field of eigh teen riders on the ~IT course by stealing an easy victory after taking the lead from early leader, Steve Okuda (Kaw), on the seventeenth lap. From this point on, Daly JUSI settled himself to selling a pace that left him plenty of rOOm between the rear of his bike and the field until he started to lap Il,e field as early as lhe 22nd lap. For the next 28 laps, Doty handled the field much to his liking as he lapped all, but second place Elberl Tumer (Yam). Jamey Blunt, an up-and-coming rider for big·lime racing, was taken to Downey Community lIospital with what appeared at trackside as a concussion of the head. On lap 43, Blunt spilled aftei leaving the main course. One of the riders may nave hit Blunt. While Doty breezed to a commanding lead over the t1eld, Okuda continued to drop back allhough still h~g on to second positi n. On lap 24-. Turner, always in sight of Doty about a quarter of a lap back, picked up the pace mid-way in the race, and by lap 30, looked like a solid contender for a late surge. Gary Wells (Bul) the sensalional high-jumping youngster from Phoenix, Arizona, made a return appearance a winning one by making short work in defeating Rick Goade (Bul), Allen Swett (II on), Mark Palmer (B ul), and Roy Weisberg (Ossa), in the 250 Tr Main. Goade, taking lhe lead from Wells in the second lap, won the 250 F.T. fealure over Swett, and Weisberg. Wells was unable to finish as he headed for the pits on lap six with an engine Il,at started to freeze. Palmer, holding third as he crossed the white flag, spilled in the first corner, but was not injured. Turner, a rider you arc sure to hear a lot from in the coming season. went wire·to·wire in winning the 125 F.T. Main. J\like Mining (Hod) finished second ahead of ~Ionte Ashmore (Kaw). Trojan Speedway management has reponed that regular racing programs will be held every Thursday night through the winter months due to the in tenen of many of e riders local and out·of·town. -... -----~. ~ . --~ h
