'" Corona Short Track and Half-Mile R(,J ~- wind all da b L I ked liked they were going to give the racers a reprieve 11t'cdllesday lligh1:.-Irwas-not to be and after one moto they came back again stronger and colder than ever. Didn't slow down any of the racers but it Was uncomfortable from a spectator stand poin t. Gary Wells was on hand getting back into the racing scene more and more after coming off tour. He also was responsible for starting the fad of the evening. [n the Open Expert Short Track, Gary only gave up on heat to Earl Roloff on his way to the win and the wheelies on the straigh t-a-ways started a contest that was to last all night among many of the riders. Gary Davis, Gary's teammate and a jumper in his own right Was third behind Earl. Gary "D" had all kinds of problems, mechanical and otherwise. In the Open Half ~1i1e go it was Gary again in total domination, even though Paul Lambert gave him a good run for his money. Chuck Fq.lchey was third. There were two 250 Expert Short Tracks. In Division I, Rob Morrison, rode a new Yamaha he had just taken delivery of that night. The bike was stock except for the pipe and if he can go as fast as he did Defore any fine tuning is performed he will be able to fly when he gets it set up the way he wants it. He wasn't running against any slouches either with the likes of Pat Guthrie and Randy Bailey running second and third. Danny Hockie topped Earl Roloff and Carroll Heiland to win Division n. Gennai Indoor Picks Up the %56 -m,..aM--- IV_inll weetId~ fint go, changed things around and won ih n t mall m 'n P Guthrie was third. . JIm wnght mus~'e t onesome out there not having Charles Soderstrom to content with in the 175-200 Amateur-Expert Short Track. He rather had a cake waIk with Barry Tolson second and cott Flint third. He also did the same thing in the Half-mile with Barry and Scott finishing in the same order. Brian Garcia was very definitely the winner of the 250 Novice Short Track Division I bu t three riders had a heck of a time deciding who was going to be second and so ended the evening in a three way tie. The three riders were Art Close, Rick Draudt and Norm Blake. David Zeiders had ·the distinction of being third. Don Remp won the second Division from Travis Patton and Leon Autry. Steve Bales again ran as a Novice and blew tbe 175-200 Novices in the weeds in the Short Track. It seems a shame that a rider of Steve's caliber has so little confidence in his ability t<;> ride against Amateur riders. He's definitely not a Novice. Mark Costilow was second and John Shipley third. Mini-cycles were allowed to run with the mo torcycles beside their own class and some of them did very weIl. John Erickson aboard a Kawasaki won the classes and Rick Naymola who has given up the Mini-Cycles even though he does ride a 100 in a Mini-Enduro frame was second. Rick Younger was third. Floyd Petton won Division n from Marty Miller and Jim summers. Minneapolis ~--____:,....-:__~~,....~ MINNEAPOLIS, MINN., Dec. 1, 1972 - John Gennai picked up his second win in the Indoor Championship series and his seventh in the last ten events. The third points event of the series was another California show with six westerners in the final .. Gennai took the lead 'on lap three from Dave Hansen and proceeded to Top riders TUNE IT IN, then tum it ON ! motor away from the field leaving Hansen and Rick Hocking to battle for second with Hocking displacing Hansen near the midway point. Jim Foley and Mike Kidd rounded out the top five. Hocking still holds top spot in the points race but by a mere 10 points over Gennai with Dave Hansen, Mike Kidd, and Jim Foley holding the premier spots. Hand Washable Don Remp goes Ossa-jng. EI Trial Nears _ Final preparations for the Third Annual EI Trials de Espana are nearing completion at Escape Country Motorcycle Park on Trabuco Canyon above E1 Toro in Orange Canyon'. Finishing off a very successful year for the trials riders of Southern California, is the annual even t from which the proceeds are used to send the top riders of the area to Spain to compete in the Spanish Round of the International Trials Competition. Although EI Trials de Espana is primarily a fun event in which any rider of a muffled motorcycle may enter, there will be sections for Expert and Mast~r class competitors which will be located wi thin easy access of the spectators. These sections will undoubtedly hring the hi saw it but can't believe it" reaction so typical of first time trial visitors. With riders such as Laine Leavitt of San Francisco who has won the event the last two years, fourteen year old Marland Whaley of San Diego who is the new State Champion, Richard Bledsoe, Mark Eggars, Masters all, the exhibition sections should prove ou tstanding. To make the occasion even more festive, three trials motorcycles, donated by the Ossa, Montesa and Bultaco factories will be given away to holders of "donation" tickets. The trial will start at 8: 00. a.m. on Sunday December 10 so get ou t those scooters and h ave a ball. .. Riding * Racing • Street Stay GLOVES Soft Othman Distributing Co. Perris TT by Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., Nov. 11, 1972 - An unexpected added attraction were three visitors from across the waters, members of the side-car racing fraternity, Bart Notten of Holland, Samuel Haller of Switzerland, and Hans Georg Peppinghaus of Germany. The trio Was very impressed with the American variety of dirt racing, and all thought they would like to give it a try. They were most interested in getting a closer look at some of the larger machines and even th ough only one spoke English they had no problems communicating when it came to bikes and their engines. Little Ricky Hart, after a year of trying to make it to the top, won his first. trophy on a motorcycle in the 125 Novice class Division II. Ricky really looked like he had it all figured out as he put it to Mike Thayer and Conrad Weber. Richard Beck, another one who has really gone through a lot came due in the 125 Novice 1. Richard has coped' with just about everything that could possibly happen and then some and it was a very satisfying thing to see him fmally get his win. Second place Richard Kyzer who hasn't. been around for a long while got back into the racing sc~ne and looked like he will be giving them fi ts as he finished second. Debbie McGregor lost a heartbreaker _ in the 100 ovice 11. In her first moto her bike broke, and she DNFed. The next two heats saw her out in front all the way the way but it wasn't enough, and she had to settle for second overall. Walter Hall edged Debbie out fo~ first and Robert Christ was third. Rick Naymola took the win in Division I. Vern Maxwell is making a habit of winning as he did it again, this time in a combined 125-175 Amateur.Expert. Eric Engen and Randy Smith were second and third. A weird thing is happening. Doug Mason has moved up to the big. bike ranks to challenge Walt Foster and Walt has returned the favor by going down to Doug's 250 Expert class. Doug wasn't there Saturday but Dennis Creeson was and held Walt to a second. Bob Graves was third. Jimmy Johnson is looking a transfer to the Amateur ranks righ t in the eye, as he ran away from Bob Grant and Jerry Renner in t1ie Novice Moto. Jack McCafferty learned how to square his comers and it lead him to victory in the Amateur-Expert Motos. The first race was a photo f.. .n ish between Jack and Dennis Junker with the nod giving it to Jack. In moto two Jack had a clear win and was looking good for the overall. In the final go, Dennis carne back strong and collected the first but with Jack right behind him it wasn't enough. Bob Herrick was third.
