Roger DeCoster seemed to slip back from the leading pair but still held third ahead of Lackey at the finish. Brad beat out the Czechs, gett;"g by both of them with about ten minutes go go in the moto. Balm was looking pretty strong, however. DeCoster had two thirds; Lackey a sixth and a fourth; Takezawa, his most impressive ride. American Maico rider Gary Chaplin got a hole shot in the third moto that had the crowd gasping. It was unbelievahle. What was even more mind·boggling was that at the end of lap one, a revitalized DeCoster had gotten past Chaplin and was making his Suzuki go very fast, indeed. "Do it, Roger. Oh boy, win it. He's the World Champion, you know," the guy informed me. "No kidding. Really?" He gave a strange look. Nobody likes a smart guy. On the restart of the second International moto. While Roger was flying, Jonsson had already worked up to fourth after a very bad start. He seemed to slice by riders completely effortlessly. I1is lines were smooth and, for the most part, sedate-looking. The top Americans in the moto were Chaplin, Lackey and a strong-running Tripes. Arne Kring, who had gone out with mechanlcaJs in rno to two, was dicing with Miroslav I1alm for third. DeCoster and Jonsson were having their own race out in front. It was a really classic duel between the two best 500 class riders on earth. With about LO minutes left in the moto, Ake made a dramalic in-the~air pass over the Start/Finish jump and the two con tin ued to go at it in reverse order; Ake in fronl. Kring gOt in front of Halm and seemed to dose on the pair but he was still about half a lap down. Lackey was still coming but was a good ways back, about tenth. lIe moved up to ninth with about 10 minutes to go and that's where he finished as top American just ahead of l\1a.rty. Then came Gary Jones and Gary Chaplin, Roger DeCoster and Ake Jonsson seemed to finish their race a long time before Arne Kring came down the hill to the finish straigh t. Balm assured his third overall by hanging on to the fourth spot. Jonsson had his eighth straight overall win in the 1972 TransAMA I ntemational Series. When he went to find out about the awards presentation for that evening, Ake fell dOWll the steps of the press trailer.
