He was second to Jonsson, overall. But how he does move when he's out there racing. Roger
DeCoster goes about as fast as he needs to.

Third overall and first Czech was Miroslav Halm on the works CZ, He seemed to like the Carnegie
course; looked strong all day.

While his less fortunate Husqvarna teammates, Andy Roberton (28) and Arne Kring push across
the line.
the Japanese 250 National Champ and
Kawasaki factory rider was consistcn t
and quick enouRh to finish tenth
overall. He was just behind Gary Jones,
who was more steady than spectacular
on the 500 Yamaha. Takezawa has given
up his Dayglo pink leathers for a while
but Yoshimura seems to have gotten
hold of the paint and smeared it all over
the gas tank of the 255cc Honda.
HOW IT HAPPENEDThe gate dropped for the. first
International mota and Ake Jonsson
grabbed the lead into the first tum. lIe
kept the lead until the checkered flag
came Out thirty minutes later. End of
Mota One.
Bengt Abe.rg, former 500 class World
Champion, was a few bike lengths
behind Ake on the first lap and about
the same distance behind him on the
last lap. Lackey was sixth, sandwiched
between CZ works riders Mirosfav Halm
and Jiri Churavy. Gary Jones 'was
second American with his best finish of
the day at eigh th. Marty Tripes
appeared on a last-minute factory CZ
(Ile was scheduled to ride a private
Boyd & SteUings Yamaha.) and Pierre
Karsmakers was on a Kawasaki instead
of a Ilusky. Jonsson's win wasn't
exactly ho-hum but it was pretty
unemotional, in a cool professional way.
Joel Robert pushed his Suzuki into the
pits looking ve.ry disgusted. It quit
again.
Bengt Aberg grabbed the lead by the
end of lap one in the second mota. He
was folJowed by the two Czechs and
Brad Lackey, who had gotten into
fourth by the second lap. Lackey was
dlased by Ake, who was chased by
Roger DeCoster. First Jonsson, then
DeCoster got by Brad. Jonsson kept
moving by the CZ guys into second and
Aberg got the sign that Ake was back
there. Brad got back up to fifth while
Marty Tripes had moved up steadily to
be second American. Rich Thorwaldson
(Suz) was third Yank throughout most
of the mota.
Aberg stayed out fron t on the thin,
thin edge of control damn near doing
tank-slappers for thirty minutes. Ake
