The distinct ions are externa lly slight but nonethe less exist. What may be more remarka ble is that there seem to be no major differen ces in design, either of engine or basic geomet ry. Impres sions gathere d by some Souther n Californ ia riders indicate that Honda has fOllowed Lbe same route as Kawasa ki in motocro ss engine design, i.e., a broad, flat power cuIVe. The goal was to produce lots of torque at low RPM, even if it mean t giving away a horsepo wer or two. The Honda 250 does just that. It is not pipey but 30 horses would be a top estimate . Jt is possible to stand the Elsinore and Lbe works bike on the rear wheel just by dialing on throttle from fairly low in the rev range. The Hondas are, at any rate, fast enough as they are. They won't suffer a speed disadva ntage. Based on his rides on the 250 1arty Tripes produc tion version, reflecte d that it was very good for a box stock motocro sser; probabl y the best of the non-wo rks machine s. Bruce Baron allows as how the works machine is the finesl 250 he's ridden, but it should be kept in mind that he's riding for Honda: a ride that he's wan ted for some time. He approve d of the engine characte ristics, power from low down whi h makes the bike more tractabl e and quicker to get around a motocro ss cOurse since you 're not continu ally fighting to keep it on the pipe. He liked the handlin g but there seems to be a fair amount of rear end hop and the front end definite ly wants to slide out of the groove, or even a random line, on bermed turns. The aluminu m Honda shocks with the finned oil reseIVoirs do not seem to be the comple te answer, nor do the dual split springs. Detailin g on the bikes, particul arly the works machine , is very impress ive. The Honda rims arc already legenda ry and they seem to be somewh at improv ed and lightene d on these two-stro ke motocro ssers.
