Salt Lake Short _ T r a c k ~ by Ray Grass SALT LAKE CITY, UT., Nov. II, 1972 - In this race under the dome of the Salt Lake Fairgrounds Coliseum, there were more tum-or-events than on a roulette wheel. Take for example the three heats of racing in the special class of the nigh t. Jt was a two-way battle between Craig Williams and Tommy Dickerson. In the first heat the two jockeyed back-and-fourth for the lead the whole race. Williams, on his custom .1 awa. finally held on in the last to win. In the second heat, though, it was Dickerson, also on aJawa, who snagged the victory. In the final heat of the evening, the two bumped and pushed and slid all over the track. First it was Williams in the lead, then Dickerson', then Williams and then Dickerson. Finally, despite a home-stretch push by Dickerson, Williams got the checkered. In the second Main, the Open Expert, \Villiams had the same trouble. The only difference being, the tall. light-haired and mustachioed rider won all three heats for the crown. Dickerson had the same problems in the 125 E,.-pert class. If be wasn't busy missing fallen rider, then he was surely busy warding off the front tire "greetings" of challengers. To start things out it was young Danny Maxwell who proved his worth in the scratch ~lain. As faJ' as consistency goes, there's probably not a rider on the track to match young Danny. He won the Main on his Yamaha with little, if any, threa~ from the pack. Hugging the corners and coming-on in the stretch, Danny took the checkered a goodly distance from second pia e runner ScOll Jones. A short time later, Danny returnea to the track to grab title number two the small bore Novice. Again with the calmness of a glider, Danny kept'er in close .. Not to be out-done, his father Ron poured the coals to his 250 Maico to claim number one spots in the 250 Expert and the Sweepstakes. But. even father had to bow to the power in the scratch Main. He started iRODU~tington OMPETITION , YCLE Moto-X - Desert Enduro 16612 Beach Blvd. Beach, Calif (714) 847-2202 out just behind Danny, but spun on one of the "ice" spots and had to finish out of the running. Craig Williams won second honors in the 100 Expert behind Rock Frampton. Williams, on a Suzuki, challenged Frampton, but couldn't quite muster enough to get around. Third was Senior cyclist Adrain Nebeker on a Honda. Fallin!: behind on lasl week's TRIUMPH - BSA - RICKMAN BARBOUR SUITS - KETT BOOTS RANDY'S CYCLES RT. 140, BOYLSTON.
