CRA MX at De Anza' ., 1 _ by Barge Charger SUNNYMEAD, CAL., Nov. 19,1972Contrary to what the Sierra Club might say. Mother Nature must like bikers. Why else would it rain all week and clear up just in time for all the diit tracks to dry to just the right consistency for racing? Bill Franks rode his Steens to three easy firsts in the Minicycle Junior class. It wasn't quite so easy for LaDell Eide in the Beginner 'cIass as Russ Eide, Dwayne Franks a·nd Mark Williams each put up a battle for the lead but LaDell took the win wi':, good riding and a very fast little Morgan minicycle. Bob Oshiro held the lead for every lap in the first two iOO Beginner motos with Billy Edrington a close second. Lee Eide finally got h is Morgan going righ t and was allead of Oshiro from start to finish in the third moLO. Dave Ritlg hrough t a brand new Yamalla out to race in the 125 Junior class and won a first place trophy with it. Scott Gordon held the lead for awhile but had to settle for sec.ond benind Ring. Steve Wells must like number two as his riding number is 22 and he was 2nd in all three motos for. the second week in a row. Mark Proctor won the 125 Beginner class. There was some doubt that he had entered the riRht class as his Monark beat all the Juniors also. ,... N en .0 ~ c ~ w Z W ..J (,) > (,) Bob Oshiro 19871 was eventual 100 Beginner followed by Billy Edrington 1391. They are chased by eventual fifth olacer Mike Barbata. The mird moto was the tie-breaker with Taylor coming ou t allead. Terry Donnelly was out of sight in the 250 Junior class, At least by the finish of each moto he was out of sight of Ritchie Arrietta who ran a comfortable second in all three motos. Ken Shea fell while leading the first 250 Beginner moto and Bob Quinn held the lead for the next four laps until Keith Patten managed to edge him out for the win. In me second moto Patten was involved in a four bike pile.up on the downhill and could finish no better than fourth. Brian Irvin finally got his Yammy going good in the second moto and fought his way up through the pack to finish second behind Ken Shea. Shea's win in the third moto was good enough for only third place overall due to his poor finish in me first moto. No one paid much attention LO Jim Quinn in the first two motos but he was riding smoomly and finishing third in each. In the tllird moto Patten ~ot by Jim and then Irvine went charging by ,and willie Irvine and Patten were rattling handlebars Jim Quinn passed them for a second place finish and enough po in ts to edge Patten out for the overall win. Richard Robinson won the first Open Junior moto by a wide margin over Tim Elsenpeter. Elsenpeter walked away wim the last two mC1tos when Robinson's CZ developed problems. Fred La Ferney led the Beginner class in all three motos from start to finish. Troy Miller took second after fending off a determined attack by Robert Hatcher. _ Authorized b - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - , y Mail to: CYCLE NEWS WEST, Box 498, Long Beach, Ca. 90801, I I I I I I I ..• DEVORE, CAL., Nov. 12, 1972 Arroyo Racing Association held a full motocross program under crisp. clear blue skies with snow capped mountains in the background. It was a beau tiful day and a beautiful setting for racing. The excitement for the day was really built up by the presence of the Cole Brothers Maico Team wno made a real go for the Expert money in the 250 and Open class. Von Petersen riding a Cole 250 Maico battled head·on wim CZ desert ace Jim Fishback for three motos but had to settle for second place with Fisnback taking the top money. The Open Expert class was dominated by another Cole rider by the name of John Lewis. The 125 Expert class was taken by a very fast Gary Huber on a very fast Monark. The 100 Junior event once again fell to Reggie Dunlap and his Harley Baja. Dunlap was well on his way to a clean sweep of all three motos until the end of the third moto when he water fouled and had to sit out a lap. Second place was the property of young Jackson Kistler on a Yamalla. Kistler did a fantastic job considering that he normally rides a DKW that broke in practice and he had to ride an almost street legal Yamana Trail bike. The 125 Junior race was one of the most exciting of the day. 14 year old Kelly Callaway led every moto on the first few laps and broke in every moto. Tnis was the chance that first place Randy Ayars needed to put his Yamalla in the w inner's circle. The second position went to Montesa rider Stan Flanders. The 250 Junior race was fast and wild as usual. It was a clean sweep for Husky rider Ron Dugan who is the sales manager for Malcomb Smith's K&N Motorcycles. Ron must believe in the product he sells! He did nave to add his own talent to stay allead of second place Dave Hopkins and tllird place Dan Albright who were both on CZ's, The Open Junior event was the property of Jerry Harris and his powerful 400 Suzuki. Jerry had his work cut out for him by having to stay allead half of the Hastings Brothers Racing Team. Cole Hastings got the second place gqld with Cole Bromers Maico owner Gary Cole getting the third place. It appeared that all of the riders on mis beau tiful Sunday were getting in shape for the ,A rrby 0 Racing Association's December 3rd Pro/Am Junior qualifier race. This will be the next race put on by the Arroyo Racing Association but don't forge that there is motocross every Saturday and Sunday at Arroyo Cycle Park. Check your calendar.
