Dawson GRAND JUNCTION, COLO., Nov. 5, 1972 - Four straight weekends of unseasonable rain and snow, after their Eight Hour Maratlron on October 1st, was long enough for the Desert Scramblers MX to wait to race! They went ahead and put one on today, under threatening skies and on again off again cold November rain. A good number, 13 to be exact, of riders came in from out of town, so they did not pull ou t and go home, like several of the local boys did today. Twenty-nine dirt racers started out in unstable shale soil, which rapidly turned in to w heel-clogging goo 'after each class had run its first 30 minutes motos. After its first destructive heat, the 250 class voted against running a second time, as only the top three men were left to compete. Aspen's Scott Campbell, Husky-mounted, finished an unbelievable half lap ahead of second placer local Jim Hixson (CZ); at least Hixson exlairned it "unbelievable" the way Campbell pulled away from him in the near-impassable desert muck. One of the top desert racers, in these parts, Ray Patton, skillfully brought his CZ in third 250. Visiting Missourian Roger Davis grabbed off top 125 Amateur, and local Open Expert Leroy Blackshear won a close race over Scramblers prexy Jim Draper. Blackshear rides what he sells, a 360 Yamaha, and Draper herded a big-bore AJS around the slippery sloping flats and gullies. Normal hilly MX terrain was out of question today for everyone. All these guys seem to be very competitive and this is what makes good races even better. Suzuki Team rider, Dean Mizes, riding a Suzuki (naturally), won the 250 Junior class. David Bosart (Bul) won the 250 Senior class. Greg Laves, Bultaco riding CC Grizzly Bear Team member, copped second place after shutting out Mike Lyons, backing him down to third place. Sheldon Otto pushed his Husky around in first all three motos, handily winning the Open Senior class. get started before Leon gets out of dust." by Tommy & Rita Gunter VICTORIA, TEX., Nov. 5, 1972 Overcast skies greeted the riders and spectators at Mid-Coast Cycle Park today bu t no rain fell. It was just pleasant and cool - excellent for racing. Minibikes got off to a good start with Mark Varley (Yam) taking first in both heats and John Bersch (Hon) taking second in both. Judy Gunter (Hon) took first overall by winning all three heats in the Powder Puff class. The two George sisters, ....., Donna and Sam (really Sonya) split a couple of heats on their Montesas with Donna taking two seconds and one third and Sam one second and two thirds. Bobby Morgan (Hon) did a great job of winning the 100 Junior class. He took first in every heat but not without competition from a lot of riders. Aggressive Bruce Miller (Pen) won the superfast 125 Expert class with Ossa mounted Glenn Griffin right behind in second. This is one of my favorite classes because you can always depend ..
