AME MX _ oy Tom Corley • CARLSBAD, CAL., Nov. 19, 1972 The AME racers found things to he a little different with the European MX track at Carlsbad with the track being modified because of the beavy rains that made it even too messy for molocrossers. The European Track at Carlsbad was improved by the rain. Some people had problems with mud. by Mark Milford MOORPARK, CAL., Nov. 12, 1972 Although many expected the nearby action at HopeLOwn to draw away all the local hotshoes, today's W.S.M. motocross at Muntz Cycle Park bosted the best competition it has. seen in several weeks. ' Beginning wi.lh the 100 Jr. class, Steve Rawson (Suz), wbo led his class at Hope town before breaking down the day before,. and Casey Wasem (V am) began battling, literally wheel to wheel, around the track. Vet no sooner had they passed the scoring stand on the second lap wben Casey slid out in the first corner, taking Stever down with him. Steve lost a place and Casey o N F ' d. T h'i s t y p e 0 f Keep-the-crowd-on-their-toes action was typical of the next two motos as Rawson, Wasem, and Mark Costahaude (Ric) kept fighting at the [ront, crashing, and ON Fing. By the end of the day, no one could even guess at the overall finishes. Ha"rd to encore that act? Perhaps, but [our very rapid front-runners in the 125 Jr. class tried. Everell Angle (DKW) and Skip Reuter (DKW), both sponsored by Camarillo Competition Cycles, Mark Milford, sponsored by Yamaha of Thousand Oaks, and Ken Post (Pen) kept so closely together that a single slip would cost any of them their place. Yet, after all· the "slipping", the finishes in the first two motos WCTe Angle, Post In England they are using those things for police bikes. .....; ,; o Z (J) Taking off on the very sloppy track first today was the 500 class where the action was clinched by the Coast Moto Cycle tearn with star Peter Maly pocketing the check for first place in the Seniors and racer John' Wilder hooking the big win in Junior scene. Maly slopped the first moto lookin' good on a new CZ when he landed some bad luck with a fall that forced him in to a fourth place finish. Gaining back his usual and consisten t lead in the seconp and third mo tos con fi rmed h is overall win with tbe other super 500 Senior racers John Fackler and Ken Ratzloff settling for the next two places. John Wilder had his good luck with him today by choking out the 500 Juniors and is just a nipp away from joing the Intermediate AME troops. Wilder's Coast Moto Cycle CZ made the winning come easy for.him with not too much commotion coming from his followers Mike Norris and Wayne Carlton. Some people went fast. Muntz MX - - - - 1Ei _ and Milford. The last go, therefore proved to be the' unexpected turnabout For, as the pack rumbled (buzzed?) out of the infield and into the hills, they were led this time by Reuter. He; in tum, was followed by Post and Milford, and Angle, in a poor position to defend his first place standing, lagged behind. But, in another show of the afore·menlioned '·slips",· Post over-cooked it and crashed. Angle, meanwhile began creeping up on MilJord, and Milford began sneaking up on Reuter. Finally, on the last lap with 5 yards between them, Angle slithered past Milford and that's how they .finished. Everett thusl" clinched first overall with Post seco'nd and Milford third. The 250 Jrs. lacked this close action but not the excitement. The first moto went to Jim Byrd (Ric), the only other notable in the race being Ken Green (CZ) who worked up from tenth to finish fourth. That, the pligh t of working up from a bad start, befell Byrd on the second go as he also finished fourth, while Green ran away from second place and hid. The final moLO became "the Showdown" and. to the crowds deligbt, both had a good start . and led away to have their own private battle. Passing and re-passing amongst themselves, Byrd finally took the lead for good, relegating Ken to second overdll and taking first bimsel f. :;: w Z W ...J U >U
