SO THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED Our thanks to the Lightweights M.C., the best scrambles club in the District, and to all of jeff's friends. Special thanks to the Parker and Collins families. JEFF SEXTON & fA~IILY Chino, Calif. CONGRATS TO KIRK Kirk Redding. We would like to be the first to congratu.late you on winning the number one District 37 heavyweight plate for 1972. Lots of luck in the [uture. TRACK-N-TRAVEL Chino, C;J.1if. IN BAJA lVe was robbed. Such' injustice. To say nothing of inaccurate reporting! J refer to vour picture of Karl Krohn riding the hack in the recent Baja lOOO on page 35 of your November 14th issue. Those Mexjcans sure do know what a sidehack looks like. They saw Frank Danielsen ride one La victory in the B,\ja 1.000 in 1970 and 1971. Ile also rode the 500 in 1971 and finished that one, too. Ile is the only hack to ever complete either of these races. Come on fell as , lets hear it for the finisher! MRS. FRANK ~l. DANIELSEN Los Angeles. Calif. Frank Danielsen's fini hing ride in the 1971 Baja 500 was one of the greatest ever. The Mang. Ed', gOI some photos of he and monk,ey as they were still pushing on south of O/os Negros. We were surprised there was not more mention of thai feat in all the press at that time. We can see nothing inaccurate about the reporting on the sidehack in this year's lOOO... Ed. EVERYTHING HUNDREDS The land usc fee has been dropped tf us had been placed in the 25Q Expert class. lVe went to the head official and asked why. He stated that four of us had signed .in as Expert and- one had signed in as Amateur, and that he couldn't run the 175 Amateur with the Experts. We tried to explain that the event should be run as an. Amateur/Expert class bUl found him very rude and arrogant. 1\ great number of riders at the track are disapointed in the way NRA managed the events. 'fom and Elaine were 110t perfect in their decisions, but they were honest, rajr,' and had a beller outlook for rider safety than the new managemen l. I think it's about time the owners of the track LOok a good look at NRA managemen t and thougl\t about bringing Tom and Elaine back LO run an even t. SCOTT D. FLINT 89X Edgemon t. Calif. DEAR JOHN LETTER The dipping from your edition of October 24 just reached my desk (fast service!) and your editor's note at the bOllom seemed to call for a reply to clarify a point for you I'm referring to our mid-October letter addressed to all groups in terested in off-highway vehicle use and enforcement. In that feller we mentioned lhat a vehicle trespassing on private land (assuming that the vehicle lacks both a street license and an OHV sticker) can be cited on two counts: first, for trespassing; second, for lacking an OIIV stic ker. Your foo LnOlc said: "The oJf-highway usc sticker wa, originally to license use of public lands. Now you'll be doubly cited for riding on private land. Something's wrong... Ed." If you'll review Section 38010 of the Vehicle Code, you will note that it says nothing directly about "public lands". It says that every vehicle operated or used exclusively off the highways 'shall be issued and dispaly an identification plale or device, etc., unless such vehicle . falls within one of the listed exceptions. One of those exceptions is the one refelTing to use solely on private property with express permission of owner or tenant. i\ vehicle being operated on private property without such express permission clearly is viOlating trespass laws (usually local ordinance)_ Since the vehicle does not carry an OHV sticker plate (or a street license), assuming that LO be the case in this hypothetical situation, the owner can be cited for that violation of the Vehicle Code as well as for trespassing. This may never actually occur, but it could. In other words, if all owner is going to use his vehicle at all, it must be identifed or registered, either for street use or for off.higlnvay use, unless it is used exclusively within one of Lhe exceptions listed wlder Section 38010 (b). I' .. h" Now we do not be leve somel lI1g S wrong" with. that in terpretation. I t just further points up the fact that the potential penalty for getting caught in violation of the .Ia.w far outweighs the amoul1t of registration fee due, and that good citizenship calls for compliance with the law, not definance of it. We would hope that "Cycle World" would lead lhe way among its wide readership, for one thing is sure: unless the present pace of registration compliance with the off-highway vehicle' law steps up considerably, funds for the special recreation trails and facilities will be a long time in accumulating for use by the Departmen t of Parks and Recreation and by local governments. Enclosed is a copy of our recently revised OHV information leaflet. Best regards, and best wishes for continued success with "Cycle \Vorld." fRA K BRAGG Special Consultant Off-Highway Vehicle Section Dept. of Malar Vehicles Wait 'til Joe Parkhurst hears about this! Not only do we not (currently) work for "Cycle World". we maintain that funds for bike trails and "facilities" are already way overdue. How many dollars have to accumulate before the good citi'zen biker sees some benefit to himsclf? .. Ed. NORTHWEST PASSAGE Why is it that you almost ignore our few) Northwest riders? By " orth "Vest" I mean orth West Un i ted States, (no I North West California) like Oregon and Washington - and that's Washington State, not D.C. In particular: "Steve Baker, an Oregon rider, was second" (Laguna Seca. junior, and Ontario junior). That uS teve Baker, an Oregon rider" ...is from Bellingham, Washington - and is only 17 years old. A quiet. skinny, hespectacled little kid with braces on bis teeth who rides his guts out in every race he enters, whether it be a road race, TT, mile, half-mile, Or short track. lle is also a non-factory Yamaha rider (fred Deeley sponsored). jerry Greene deserve all the credit given him, to be sure, but I think that the kid is more than just an '"also-ran " Maybe you've never even noticed him, Please do some time. Incidentally, L am not even acquainted with the lad, so it isn't that I'm biased for a friend. Would like to see more interviews of the top National riders. Maybe one on our new Grand National Champ, Mark Brelsford? And how about that neat Gene Romero? john llateley - Gary Scott - Kenny Roberts - Dick Mann Don Castro - etc.? MARY ADLER Vancouver, Wash. VIRGIL CAIN Buena Park. Calif. But there's only one of each ... Ed. REGISTER YOUR DIRT BIKE My bike is licensed and street legal. Will I be required to buy an "off-road" license in july? I only ride my bike on the street maybe three or four times a year (Hi Mountain, Greenhorn, Shamrocks enduro, and, jf they accept my entry, the Vegas Trials) and I'd like to get out of paying the state $24 a year (ouch). Is there some kind of cheap temporary registration I could get for these occasions other than borrowing a plate' from a friend? ENDURO FREAK This is only one of a raft of letters on dirt bike registration. The man with the straight poop on off....oad registration is Frank Bragg. with th.e OMV. We finally encountered an outfit that stands, cheerfully, behind their gua:r'antee with no hassles, what..fs at b other. Pacific Customs, who distribute th.e good-looking trick gas tanks that seem to be springing up on every track in California plus half the bikes in the TransAMA Support class, claim that their tanks won't leak or crack. We had one with early model petcoeks that had the internal O-ring come adrift. They installed new petcocks with a smile and the one-year guarantee still in effect. We hate to be cynical, but that was a Singular experience with an accessory manufacturer. We'd even lost the sale slip somewhere. * * * As if Carlsbad didn't have enough racing fa cilities with a drag strip, two motocross courses, a road racing course (Well, sort of) they are now building a speedway track. Class A freaks, rejoice. Don't know about any possible promotions there yet. * is Ascot Park in * Gardena * attempting to set a new record for professional racing. So far, they have been rained out for three weeks in a row. They are going to get it together to try for four. Stay tuned for all the gripping details. Which will be rained out more often, the half-mile speedway or the Golden State Championship AMA Half-mile? How deep into the mud can a speedway machine dig? Will Aggie have to sell his Cadillac? What does the j. C. in Agajanian's name stand for? Why motorcycles? Why Gardena? Why a Half-mile? Why j. C. Agajanian? Why me? You tell me and before TIunksgiving! ~ ,; o Z ~ w Z w -' U ~ U
