Imagine, aTrack with acushion in the Daytine! If ./ I 0-37 TT Scrambles by Ed Drech sler PERRIS, CAL., Nov. 19, 1972 - A week of rain in the Los Angdes a(ea and very uncertain weather reports left this week's point run in serious doubt. Sunday turned out to be rainless but fog shrouded. The fog did not lift until about I L To keep on schedule, all events were cut short one lap. The week of rain left the track with a deep cushion. Imagine, a track with cushion in the daytime. After a late start, hard work by the Lightweigh ts MC got us Out by 4:00. Riding a Suzuki in the 50 class, Doug Nicol severly trounced all comers. Doug played cat-and-mouse with Eddie Lawson. gaining a large lead in the back section of Lhe course, then slowing to dice with him in the sweeper. Doug is one of the very few riders I have seen who can power slide the entire sweeper on a 50 machine. "Rubber Jegs" Milner dominated the 100 class with the wizard himself. Wayne Whisenant, and Hodaka mounted Mike Laney in close pursuit. You never knew that a 100 could go so fast. Brian King out-distanced the entire 125 class. I t appears that he now has his thing together. Back in the pack, the bal ties for second place were fast and furious, but Lloyd Quintard managed to edge au t Rex Hailey for the honors. Riding as a pie plate Novice. Steve Bales had to restrain himself t'b keep from lapping the 175-200 Novice field. It was reported that Seve possibly holds the classification of Expert at one or more of the local tracks, but is legally classified as a Novice in District 37. Seems to me that their should be some way for the District Stewards to check with the local track owners for actual classifications. This race wasted Steve's time and cost serious 'ovices valuable points. Keep the Novice class Novice. He took two out of three from Charlie Gann in the 175-200 Expert class, and he really had to work for it. Lead changes were frequent, and the man who made the least number of mistakes won. Rob Morrison provided the challenge in the 250 Expert class, but th is was to be Super Charlie's day. • Kirk Redding got beaten. Scott Smith, riding a brilliant race, out-distanced ·Kirk who was mounted on a very slick Maico. Paul Lambert took second. Kirk slipped in for a third. The Open Expert class provided the best sport of the day. It appeared to be the Elsinore Raceway riders against the Perris Race way rider against the world-famous television personality Tom White (he took a leading role in last week's ABC TV's Wide World of Sport's coverage of the Ascot National). The Junior Professional rider showed the troops what was required to make money. In mota one, Tom fought his way to the front of the pack and a clear lead only to have his points foul and reduce him to pushing his bike across the line. Bobby Sanders, on his first big bike ride Hodaka -" at Perris, turned the throttle on WFO, riding abou t as fast as he possibly has ever gone before in his life. Bob finished mota one mid pack. Mota two saw Tom White win it, Bob Sanders go down and possibly injure his ankle. and everyone else change positions at least once. Mota three saw Torn win it, John Sprague go oul, Vic Hannan loose a rear brake and everyone change positions several times. Torn White ended up with the overall win with Richard Marquis second and John Sprague third.
