LONG BEACH, CAL., Nov. 23, 1972 -Instead of sweetening AMA professional race
purses as in the past, Cycle News will spend its 1973 $8,000 contingency budget to
tell the motorcyclists' side of the land use controversy to the general public.
Making the announcement, Publisher Charles Clayton said, "When the Cycle ews
contingency plan was started two years ago, there were only three or four companies
paying contingencies in AMA racing. Now there are dozens. Meanwhile the problem
of obtaining public land for off road motorcycle recreation has grown to crisis
proportions in some parts of America. With the nation's interest in protecting the
environment. it i; urgent that motorcycle riding present itself to the public as a
solution, rather than a problem in the preservation of nature. The only way we can
do that is by buying advertising in the mass media to present our side. And we don't
see anybody else doing it. So, now that the race'rs are pretty well taken care of,"
Clayton concluded, "Cycle News is diverting its contingency monies, for the time
being, into public relations for the dirt rider."
Billboards, newspaper ads and radio time will be contracted to show off·road
motorcycling as it really is, Clayton added. "We doa't have very much money, but
we know how to get the biggest bang for our bucks. The opponents of motor
re reatlOn kno", how to get the free publicity, buL 'when you are telling the
unsensational truth, you have to pay for it."
C de News will c!,ntinue to offer the $750 wardrobe contingency to the AMA
Grand National Champio!" which was awarded for the first tim.e this year.

sporstminded amputees?
We're writing a manual about sports
and recreation for amputees. We'd like to
hear from amputees about what they do
and how they do it.
A I though professionals are also
contributing their skills and knowledge,
ampu tees sometimes find very good
solutions Lo their own problems and
have a lot to offer each other.

To answer Ron Schneiders "how in

says there are many gods - only one
true one. Satan is the God of the lie and

The Bible states that the one true god

A greaL big thanks to all who helped

P.S. Don't eat rocks. They make your
face break out.
WHY?
I read with disgust the article on Page
5 of your November 11 edition about
the big road race at Riverside where it
said that .. the first row was aU open
machines with the exception of Pat
Evans' 350 which his father demanded
be put in the front row."
r would like to know why Pat wasn't
put back with aU the other 350's where
he belonged and why the referees allow
themselves to always be bullied around
by Dave Evans?
As a Cycle road racing fan it was
embarrassing, surrounded by all the car
people in the stands, to hear nasty
remarks passed around abouL this
incident. Most of the remarks were
about how the cyclists can't even get
along amongst themselves.
HURLEY ROCHE
Culver City, Calif.
The reason that Evans was allowed to remain
in the front row was that the the officials
chose to allow him to remain there rather
than create a ruckus. There was also a small
turnout because of the high entr.y fee and the
officials didn't want to cut the size of the
field ... Ed.

I am writing this to clarify a few facts
on your report of the Baja 1000. Terry
Clark came into EI Arco leading the 125
class, handed the bike over to Mitch
Mayes who proceeded to continued on
to La Paz. After a series of mechanical
difficulties and having Lo be towed the
last 15 miles behind a truck, Mitch did
reach La Paz, BOTH LEGS lNTA CT. He
didn't crash as the article states but the
mechanical problems cost six hours
delay.

STEREO·
Yes, friends, Krol has done it again!
The Master of Irrationality has set a new
standard.
In the November 11 issue of CN, I
resented Kro!'s consistent stereotyping
of Sierra Club members. In the
November 14 issue Krol says he does
not consistently stereorype Sierra club
.members because he doesn't mention
them that often. Apparently Krol needs
a definition. of "consistently". The
Britannica World Language Edition of
Funk & Wagnall's Standard Dictionary
says consisten t is "Characterized by
consistency; agreeing with itself; not selI
con tradictory; compatible ..'
In essence, if Krol bolds the same
thing to be true twice, he is consistent.
He thinks Sierra Club members throw
fits on command. Sierra Clubbers are
conservationists. Conservationjsts, in
'Krol's words, are uBambi lovers", a
term mean t to b,e derogatory. Krol is
consistent; he is a stereotyper; he is
wrong.
TOW
for Krol's defense of his
rationality. Implying that he is a rabid
dog is not stereotyping. If I said that all
journalists arc rabid dogs, that Krol is a
journalist, and thus he is a rabid dog,
that would be tereotyping. I did not
say this. I said "call off the rabid dogs
and return to the journalistic search for
truth and rationality." It is obvious that
Krol needs a dictionary for Christmas.
He simply does not know what I mean
because he does not understand the
words I use. If he did, he would not put
meanings in my words that are not
there. He also would be a lot more
rational.
Evidently, Krol felt the incidental
attack on his consisten t stereotyping of
conservationists to be more important
than the main point of my letter: that
McGovern was the thinking man's
choice. Anyone who places their bike
above their body when facts do not
warrant such an action is irrational,
indeed.
