01 It-. a M i POSTER C1. N .... 01 ~ N ,; o z ~ w Z W .J o > o John Hatelev leads over the jump. by Art Cox SOMIS, CAL., Nov. 5, 1972 - The best showman of the day award must go to TT Expert John Hateley. Riding his Triumph trophy with a tracllmaster frame (dry weight 210.pounds) in the 250 Expert class, he flew over jumps and slid fantastically around corners all day. In moto one Hateley started out mnth and worked up to second in four laps. _ Lynn Stokley (Mai), who tooll the checkered in moto one, was pressured by Hateley being no more than five feet behind him for a lap un til the chain came off the Triumph. By the time the chain was back on, Hateley lost a few positions and came in seven tho 250 Expert moto two started out with Chris Mogenson moving his Maico ou t for the lead with Hateley behind. After a couple of laps the Triumph man tooll over the lead and held it for the cbeckered. In moto three Hateley trUssed a shift on the start, was last over the hill and worked up to fourth by the checkered. The crowd that gathered on top of the "Ant Hill" were all amazed at this rider's speed and style. For his efforts he took home third overall Expert cash. Tom Claire on a CZ rode consistently good in each of his motos to win first 250 Expert with a 2. 3. 3, while Morgenson grabbed second. The best rider of the day was Rick Brown who "Grand Slammed" the Open Experts. Brown on a Greeves is a fantastically smooth fast competitor. Watcbing him made me wonder why he wasn't racing with the other pro riders of his caliber 'at Carlsbad! While the Experts raced for cash the Intermediates ran witlt them for trophies. This brings up the subject of a fast Intermediate - Carl Wilson piloting his Monark "Grand Slammed" the 125 Intermediates. Wilson led the Experts for two laps then did a "hea er" coming down the off Camber Hill allowing Expert Ray Byers (Worn) to take the lead. Byers rode strongly all day, but his sixth in rno to two only allowed him to take home second 125 Expert cash, while a very fast Penton rider Jeff Vidic from Glendale won overall with a 1, 1, 3. Jim Burgess (the regular starter one sees every Sunday at Bay Mare) proved he Ilnew the track by winning all three Old Timer Amateur motos. Blackie Lewis (CZ) barely won the Expert bash over Jessie Goldberg (Mai). Novice Old Timer Bill Hanby (CZ) probably won't be a Novice long. He won all three. .-.a'l973 CALENDAR A far out Poster/Calendar in 4 colors o~ $2.50 2 ft. by 3 It. from a photo by Lauri Kenney GET YOURS TODAY! Fill out and mail this handy coupon NOW.
