NEWARK, N.Y., Oct. 6-7, 1972 The East coast had been bothered by a torrential rain that left the landscape inundated with over two inches of water. Every field was soggy and the woods were drenched. On the day it cleared, several hundred riders gathered a~ Newark for the Rose Capital ational Enduro. The trail was mud all the way and the normally soft sections became bottomless quagmires. A t the 20-mile mark it was difficult to distinguish one muddy competitor from another. There was no difficulty, however, in recognizing Husqvama rider Jake Fisher from Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania. Jake. one of the top ten AMA riders, lost only 14 points to win the gold. The evening preceeding the contest a few of the nation's top ten endu.ro riders were honored at a banquet. The Wayne County M.C. feels the enduro rider is just as involved as the track racer and like the pavemen t jockey, should sh are in some of the profits. A few years ago, as an old enduro club, they started this banquet to honor rheir competitors and it was a well attended event. Out on the trail the next day, the winds blew strong in off Lake Ontario and showers sUthered across the sky drenching some of the riders at various places along the trail. HeadUghts were showing Uke dots of light bouncing along the trail in the valley and up over the grass ridges. Under the tires it was mud all the way, just Uke riding a greased rail. Water was deep and easy_ puddles were a foot or 1D0re deep. All thjs water made the event a bit more Story & Photos by Boyd Reynolds This was the first mud hole. It turned out to be 100 miles long.
