MEXICAN .000: WRAP-UP AND SHAKE-DOWN GOOD NEWS Now that the MEXICAN 1000 has been over and done with for almost a week, accurate news finally begins to fiI ter up by horsebacK' and carrier pigeon from La paz and points in between. It seems unfortunate that it takes a week to find out, but that's the way it is. Baja is a big, empty place. The ino t favorable report was that Mitch ~ayes was not injured and apparently did not crash. Jim Bringnurst and Bob Brownell, who finisbed fifth 125 on a private Yamaha, tells us that the Clarke/Mayes Harley 125 broke 80 miles out of La Paz. It was repaired by H·D ace Dean Goldsmith in time to get them an eighth in the 125 class. The earlier "unofficial" results didn't stand up to the lest of informed scrutiny. FOurth overall, when all the times got sorted out, was actually Mike Haney and Bob Hosford on the Long Beach 350 Honda, in at 21:36 lotal elapsed time. That makes Steve Hurd and Eric Jensen on a 125 DKW first 125 and fifth overall, in at 22:08. Honda worried for a few days. The 250 Puch, which was fast enough, didn't have spark enough .. Ignition problems put it and Bill Friant out. Cordis Brooks took over after brother Tom's fast time to the handoff point and endoed the DKW severely. Wonder if Tom will let his brother ride Ius bike anymore? Cordis got cuts and bruises. We tried b.ul it's impossible to cover all the checkpoints without an airpllille and the radio were useless. 1t even takes. 'ORRA a few days to figure out what happened. Frankly, it's quite ajob to penetrate the continual static of "car" talk to get any data on the bikes at all, unless you actually see it happen. For the BAJA 500, look for Team Turkey doing intisive and biting commen tary, from the saddle.. N ,; o Z ~ w Z W ..J U >U Jc~,-~~ • MORE ERRATA Jack Zink and Vern Street were sixth bike, not fifth, ~s Howard Utsey and Niles Ussery on a Husky 400 aced them ou. Zin k and S tree t were s till firs t non-Galifornians. Phil Bowers actually rode the first half (We thought he was the night flyer.) on the Yamaha 350 lWin and retired with a combination of flat tires, lost spacers and then a crash, excising an expansion chamber. Ted Pelletier, the snowmobile mechanic (chortle) from Aspen, Colorado, finished the whole thing by himself on a very bizarre 350 KawasakI. It had a huge fiberglass mono-saddlebag attached to the rear. Bobby and Lynn Wilson (son and mother) finished the course in 34:01 on a 125 Monark, not bad at alL Tbey thumped dad. Sam and Gene Dempsey got the coil back on their Triumph 650 after losing it before CP No. 1 and finished eigh th large bore. Gene Cannady got a hole in nis crankcase, had' his oil fallout and hitched back to the U.S.A.
