'" N ,; 0 Z (J) i: OJ z OJ ..J U > U PROCLAMATION by Howie Fowler GARDENA, CAL., Oct. 28, 1972Today was the inaugural Cycle Safety Clinic, presen ted by the Cycle Awareness Committee of Torrance. The Committee, an ad boc committee to the Torrance Traffic Commission, conducted a Cycle Safety Clinic at J. C. Agajanian's Ascot in Gardena. The program was the culmination of Cycle Safety Awareness Week in the City of Torrance. The first part of the Day's activities was spent in the grandstands at Ascot listening to talks from industry-related businesses and organizations. The law enforcement agencies represented were the Torrance Police: Los Angeles Police, and the California Highway Patrol. Also in attendance were Mayor Ken Miller of Torrance and Mayor Richard Young of Rolling Hills Estates. The Torrance City Manager. Ed Ferraro, was instruced in the basics of motorcycling and tough t how to ride_ Mounted on a Yamaha 100cc twin he cou Id be seen riding in the north parking area demonstrating support for the cycle program. After a break for lunell, everyone moved to the north parking area for a demonstration by the two-wheeled gendarmes from the C.H.P. and Torrance. Tbe first demonstration compared the C.H.P.'s patrol car with their lIarleys and those of the Torrance P.O. The object of the demonstration was a siml,llated panic stop at a 20 MPH roll. The bikes used rear brakes only first: then both front and rear. Also, the reaction times were recorded for both the patrol car and the bikes. The SlOpping distances and reaction times were beller for the bikes than the car, obviously. The nex t even t was a demonstration of maneuverability whereby the bikes ran through a series of pylons approximately fifteen feet apart. The. big Harley 74's experienced problems of ground clearance but nothing was really damaged. Everyone then moved to the field just outside the track itself for a loot at hikes from the various types of racing: Motocross, Scrambles, Hare & Hound, Endllro, Flat Track, And IT. Jim Conolly, Danny Hackie, Jim Wilson, and Terry Dorsch were just some of the riders in attnedence. They showed various styles of riding. and then put on a short motocross demonstration.
