Ray Topham ran thifd in the 250 Expert against some very distin
('heel company.
~--------
R.A.C.E. Night MX at Corona - - -
on the line with a dead engine. Mike
finally got it re-fued and came from
dead last to fifth with some heavy
riding. (He was actually in second
behind Bryan Breker in the 500's, but
didn't know it then). I asked Mike what
happened after that miserable start, and
he tore me up with that Kansas drawl,
saying "Hail, I keeled it twice!! That
dang thing taint know but one speed
and that's wahd open - even on the
line." Staten and Zahrt had a Royal
BatLle going for first place in the 250
Experts, with Zahrt finishing first
overall on his Bul. Bryan Breker (Hus)
took home the payroll in the 500
Expert class, followed by Krebs.
Greg Burns (often in tlie shadow of
big brother Ron) rode two beau tiful
wins and a second on his BSA for first
overall in the 500 J unior~ ahead of
Eddy Neff (CZ).

CORONA, CAL., Oct. 27,1972 - Ken
zahrt burned his Z-brand just a little
deeper into that Corona soil again with
not only the win in the 125 Experts but
also taking home the payroll in the
250's.· Kenny zoomed around the field
for two wins and a second in the 125
Expert class (t~king second only to Ken
Buirley from Salem on the last moto).
Rex Staten loaned Mike Krebs (the
Wichita Kid) his new 400 Cz when
Buddy Mike's broke down in practice.
Rex rode the new 250 CZ for its third
time out, and with the 250 and 500
Experts combined, it was wierd seeing
two Staten CZ's on that track at the
same time. I t dazzled the spectators, for
just as 880 roared past - zap - there it
was ag.ain! Rex got off to his usual
flying start, leaving Mike Krebs sitting

Rex Staten continues his domination of the Corona dark hours MX circuit. His main opposition
seems to be coming from Ken Zahrt latelv.

CORONA, CAL., Nov. 3, 1972
Kenny Zahri was back from Canoga
Park to do his thing again at Corona
Raceway, but Rex Staten not only took
away a double win from Ken, he also
went on to win the 500 Experts as well.
Zahrt on his DKW easily zinged his way
through all three motos in the 125
Expert class, leaving Mark Tyer (Pen)
with three seconds, and Bob Maxwell
(B ul) wi th th jrd overall.
Ken then went onto the 250 Experts
with his Bul only to find Rex and Ray
Topham on their CZ's waiting for him. The front three ahead of the field rode
every single lap across the line exactly as
they started each moto. Rex took home
_
the payroll, Zahrt second ~d Topham
third.
With the 500 'Experts next up, Rex
had to hustle back to the line and swap
bikes. Each time Bryan Breker and
Wichi ta Kid (Mike Krebs) we.re ready
for him and, would you believe? All
three took one win each. Staten took
home the payroll with a 1-2-2 win,
Krebs was second with a 2-3-1 and
Breker third with a 3-1-3 for the night.
When I first me t Mike he said
something to the effect that, "Hail, I
used to be kinda what you'd call a
'Hotshoe' back thete in Kansas I guess,
but I never rode so hard for nothin' till
came to California - that is, til Rex
Staten's dad got ahold of me."
