trial run." Unbelieved record for his
class. The record at that time was only
138 MPH. In making an easy pass, Carl
did a minor miracle and made a first
pass qualifying mn: 140.46 MPH!
I snould point out here that although
Carl Morrow weil(hs over200 pounds, he
decided to ride the bike himself. This
was due to the fact that in this and
other forms of racing, riders have
screwed him. Not all of them, but
enough to leave a sour taste in his
mouth.
Back to the Salt Flats. On the first
and only leg on this attempt the motor
went dead halfway through.
Wednesday, bright and early, the
bike was brought back up to the line for
requalification. With the record still at a
slow 138, Carl made the third pass of
his life and went 154 MPH. On the
return run one of those things happened
that, in your older years, you laugh at.
Carl forgot to shift into fourth. You can
imagine the RPM's of that motor as
they passed through the traps at 160
:\1PH in third! Carl's comments, "I got
confused with the 'numbers, they are
reversed on the return run," (instead of
1234567 ... they run 7654321).
In LSR runs, the qualifying run is
timed through a quarter mile timed
area. In the record run you have to
maintain your speed for one entire mile.
Just think, one mile at an RPM far
surpassing that of red line. What a
motor!
The resul t of this embarrassing
experience? A new record for the class
at 156.841 MPH.
Now tbat you got the record what do
you do? In the case in point, you get
upset at setting too slow a record. How
do you get satisfaction? Go out and
requalify at over your new record and
do the whole thing again. That is just
what Carl Morrow did.
On Friday on a single attempt at
qualifying, the partially streamlined
bike with Carl aboard went 157.304,
enough to requalify.
Saturday dawned with a strong wind.
The firt leg of the record would be
directly into the wind. Neat. Well
outside of the wind a -little problem
arose. In Carl's own words, "I shifted
too early, went into fourth too soon.
Maybe I should have stayed with third
all the way." It was true that this was
not the best run of his stay but at
152.477 you could hardly call it a slow
trip. Returning yielded an 'unbelievable
168.705 MPH.
What can be expected in the future
from this group? Fuel inJection,
blowers, even fuel could be next.
