INDUSTRY COUNCIL ~iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii;i;;;i;;;;;;;;~ TRACK RIDE IF YOU WANT TO A permit for a motorcycle track is being sought in Gonzales, California. Gonzales is in Monterey County, 20 miles south of Salinas. There was a hearing before the Planning Commission of Monterey County on August 30, 1972. The decision was a strong and definite ·'NO". There is an appeal to this decision before the Board of Supervisors. This appeal will be heard on November 14, 1972. I am trying to buy this land and set us a track because of the lack of motorcycle racing facilities in Northern and central California. I am appealing for any kind of help anyone is willing to give. I have circulated peti tions to motorcycle shops. I would appreciate your signatures . and any other help you are l"iIIing or able to give, BEATRICE EUDORA KlSrCH Gonzales, Calif. I am an avid motocross and trail rider _ toO avid most of my friends and relatives believe (I spend enormous amounts of time and money on my bike: a 1972 Penton). 1 also plan on being employed in a motorcycle shop in the near future. 1 thus feel qualified to challenge the logic of the article in the October 3 I issue by J. G. Krol. Although my girl has threatened to throw my bike off a cliff because she thin ks I care more about it than anything else, she is wrong. The thing I care most about is my life and the right to live it the way I please without interfering with other peoples lives. Mr. Krol writes as if the only or at least, the major criteria in voting is how it will affect motorcycling. What about the rest of the people in this country and the entire world? What about their freedom to say and do what they think is right for them? What about the exploitation of labor by big business? What about freedom of the press? What about war and peace? What about imperialism? What about smog and population? (If the population get much larger there won't be room for off·road vehicles, no matter who is president.) If all you care about is motorcycles, if you don't care about the food you eat or the air you breathe or the education children receive, if you don't care about being drafted to figh t in Vietnam or the Middle East, then take Mr. KroJ's advice and vote for Nixon. But if you think that your life and the Jives of everyone in the world is sligh tly more importan t than your motorcycle then vote "against" Nixon. ll's a simp,Ie matter of your priorities. As Mr. Krol says "survival firse'. REX MCLELLAN Da\~s, Calif. P.S. Is Krol really Spiro in leathers? Latest Poop - All the Way from P. 7 - - - - - - L- VOICES OF THE WEST _ Paul Smart, this time on a Ducati 750. was the winner of the Greek GP on October 20 .. Earlier in the year, Smart ~as the wmner at Imola, Europe's nchest road race, on a·Ducati. Aldana and Gene Romero models. The Aldana model doesn't run unless you throw it down on the ground, and the Gene Romero won't work until Dick Mann goes by. The CZ works bike of factory rider Jiri Churavy is, externally, less trick than many of the 250 Czech bikes that appear at local California tracks on any given weekend. Even the frame does not look all that much different, though there are nO doubt subtle geometry changes. So much for trick CZs. Ake Jonsson's Maico I«>oks very trick indeed. How about a tric~ Py1,ico series? The staff ass. road racer was a linle miffed and very befuddled after the SRA Grand Prix on Sunday. Seems that officials and tum workers kept giving him adamant signals to slow down in the comers and not brake so late. "The roadracing tires and the ceriani front brake slowed me down so much in the dirt that I had to go on the pavement. But the shocks off the Kawasaki 500 roadracer really worked in the din." * THAT FENCE IS NO MIRAGE! I would like to warn Cycle News readers that those wbo ride motorcycles at E1 Mirage Dry Lake should watch out for a fence being constructed on the northwest end of the lake. This fence is about waist high and is constructed of strong cable. The owner of tltis property has an airplane and uses this area for a runway. Along with the hobby of motorcycling, I am a landsailor also. There are many of these vebicles in use at the lake bed and the majority of them have no brakes whatsoever. Many motorcyclists will attempt to see how fast we are going or cut in on us while in a race and we don't want to have any collisions. So please ask your readers to beware of this fence and beware of the landsailers for safety's sake. (See pboto). BOB ASHLOCK Chairman Race Committee National Sand Sailing Assn. Van Nuys, Calif. BUY THAT HELMET FROM H.J. EAST Reference is made to your editorial in Volume IX Number 41 (October 24). "The Price of Freedom". We all appreciate your kind reference to the Hap Jones Distrbuting Company. However, the contributions to the National Unconstitutional Helmet Committee are made only if the helmets are purchased from Hap Jones in 'ORWOOD, NEW JERSEY. Being so close to New England, we feel that we in Norwood are part of the New England scene; and naturally we share with motorcycle riders the feeling that helmet laws for motorcycle riders and passengers are unconstitutional. MICHAEL F. BONDY Hap Jones Dist. Co. COOKIES It seems that all a girl has to do to get her name and picture in a like publication is to wear a bare midriff blouse and have cookies 'where her brains should be. Your article about Lisa Wright did nothing to further Women's Lib, it only served to further the image of the incompetent featherbrained sex-object. Maybe leathers aren't as sexy as tigh t hiphuggers, but you'd get better material if you'd tell your reporter that that's what the real women at the track are wearing tbis year. At lea" that's true if YOU like women with brains, ambjtion and courage. Jealous Dist. 38 Vista, Calif. P.S. Instead of "tootsie articles let's have more like the great one you did on Theresa Martin. tt THERE'S MORE ,_ MOTORCYCLES . ~- THAN •• * • * * * All of the Cycle ews guys out at the Carlsbad TransAMA tell me that they showed great restraint by not shooting up all their film taking pictures of the several hundred truly fine pit (and non-pit) tootsies that were gracing the hillsides. No offense, girls, but the racers really should get most of the celluloid. The sunshine does wonderful things for California honies" and as a result for California oglers. * * * A friend of ours has recently gone into competition with Cycle News Products and started selling "Team Mexican" wrist watches. The only complaints that he has received are about the Dave * * * * * * While the world was shaking from the news of Japanese new weapons, Benelli did a number of their own: a 750 Six. They claim 76 BHP at 9000 RPM. It is a single overhead cam with a 9: 1 compression ratio coupled to a five·speed gearbox. It uses three carburetors but otherwise resembles the engine compartment of a Honda Four a great deal·from the side. It uses six exhaust pipes and chain drive. It gets back to zero through dual Benelli desi
