One competitor was a few feet from
the bank when a slip of the foot let his
vehicle sink out of sight. Only a black
handlebar grip protruded 'above the
surface.
Many bikes stalled by the soggy
adventure were on dry land now--upside
down. Spark plugs were removed to
drain the cylinders and some were
running again in a matter of minutes.
A one hour rest period was granted
after an eventful 48 mile opening.
Several used lhe time to prepare for the
jaun t ahead.
The afternoon course ran up and
down the Clinch Mountain a<'d back to
the riVer. Finishers struggled through
the watercourse once again to the awe
of thousands of sun splashed .onlookers.
Finally the exhausting escapade came
to an end near the start after two days
and 350 miles.
Some people thought the early
morning river crossing was loo deep. Ult
just wasn't that bad," John Rogers said.
Rogers is chairman of the event. "I rode
it this morning with no trouble," he
continued, Hand it wasn't that bad."
For the second year in a row the
sponsoring Lonesome Pine Enduro
Riders Association of Bristol, V A, was
plagued with the problems of markers
being altered and nails being planted in
trails near Backbone Rock.
The American Motorcycle
Association sanctioned affair enticed
more than 500 applic~ts from 30
states.
