Seaview MX-:..· _ SALTON SEA, CAL., Oct. 22, 1972 Seaview Cycle Park opened its gates for the first time this Sunday hosting over 100 riders and hundreds of spectators. The new track is a one mile twisting course with many high banked turns. The course has many jumps and two very fast long banked sweepers. The moto course utilizies the two comers of the 112 mile TT track. Over 200,000 gallons of water was used in preparing the track for race day, plus a two inch rain fallon Thursday made things really nice. The minis started at 9:00 a.m. sharp with Jeff Rivaii winning the H-Over class and Mark Williams the 13-Under class. Both were riding Hondas. The 100 class had Terry Collins winning the Division I class (Yam) and Bob Theriault taking the Division IJ on a Baja. The 125 class was a fas t and very close race with Robert Baken (Yam) edging out Dan Day (DKW). The most exciting event of the day 'had to be the 250 Division I race. Jim Makos on a Yamaha and John Rogers on a Suzuki had their bikes wired for this one. Makos won with not much room to spare. The Division II 250 race was also a fast' one with Wes Bachman (Yam) edging out Jim Track (Yam). The 175's had to race with the 250's because only five signed for the race. Lyle Shoyer won this one beating most of the 250's. The Open class provided much excitement as John Rogers on a 250 Suzuki ,challenged the big bikers and beat them. The first Open bike across the finish was Tom MacNamara's CZ. by Christopher Ostlind CORONA, CAL., Oct. 28, 1972 Today's R.A.C.E. motocross was the final tune-up before next week's opening round of the Saturday motocross series in which top prize will be a Honda car, and a lot of eager riders took advantage of the opportunity to improve their skills on the demanding Corona Raceway course. In the big 250 Junior class, Greg Sokol (CZ) out-fought Rickman-mounted Jim Crockett and James Taylor for the overall honors, but there were some heavy-duty riders in that class and the final ou tcome was in doubt right up to the last moto. David Dieterle totally demolished the opposi tion to win the Mini class. The starts were close, and once David was as far back as third but his riding style and determination always got him the lead. Hot-handed David 011er and quick-shifting Mike Nicklaus filled out the top three. All three were riding the very speedy Honda Mini-Thumpers and, as usual, Escape Country MX_..:.. t •• ~ •• , by Mike Capalite TRABUCO CAN¥ON, CAL., Oct. 22, 1972 - It was a big day at Escape Country today as the AME combined their races with the ECRA. With the AME finding out at the last minute that they were without a track to run on, Jim Robinson of Escape Country graciously consented to let their riders run With his Escape Country riders so that no one would miss a day of racing. It was a massive job for the scoring crews as the two associations were scored .separately alth'ough racing together. J n apprec-iation for his riders sportsmanship and to compensate for any -inconvenience, Jim Robinson doubled all the ECRA purse monies and promised the other classes super-big trophies. Everybody got along well and proved that while we may belong to different organizations, it is all one big fraternity. Mike Causey was there on his Maico to take top money in the Open Expert class while Jerry Van Dallen will-add the trophy in the Open Amateur class to his collection with theJ,e1p of his Maico. Tom Claire was the money man for th'e 250 Experts. with three wins in a row as Curtis Lesse1 (CZ) tried to nobody even came dose. Trucking all -the way in from San Diego were Eddy Neff and his CZ. He came to ride in the 500Junior class and, after the day was over, the first place trophy was his. Finishing second was last week's winner, Gene Martin (I-Ius). Martin probably would have won again but he did a spectacular over the bars crash at the bott0':I! of the big downhill and found himself in last place when he got up. David Ele on another CZ was third and it was well-deserved, as he had to keep up with Neff and Martin and neither of those guys are slouches_ The Giovannetti boys had a great time today with Daryl winning the 250 Expert class on his CZ and brother Randy copping a second in the 125 Intermediates on his Puch. For all you riders who want to race on Saturdays but don't want to drive 6,000 miles to do it or expend too much energy on an all-day affair, then Corona Raceway is your best bet. The track is out-a-sigh t. Corona MX _ emulate him but could only manage two firsts and a second, but it was enough to take the Amateur division: The Novice win also went to a CZ with Ray Benner up. Ex'pert money in the 125s went to Mark Tyer on his Penton. Taking the other 125 classes were: Greg Blackwell (Hus) Amateur, Ray Robinson (Ric) Novice, Bill Osborn Beginner and Kenny Collins (Ind) in the First Day. With a gang of mini-cycles showing up, ~teve Collene almost lost his first place win when his en.try was scratched because someone was caught pit racing his machine, hu t Steve was able to convince the officials that the bike was taken by one of his buddies without his knowledge, and he was re-instated. You racers _migh t do well to keep this in mind when one. of your buddies wants to borrow your machine to ride around the pits, he could get you disqualified as you are responsible for yourself and your pit crew. With a large entry in both the mini-cycle Beginners and the mini-cycle First Day Divisions, it was no easy task for Jeff Wilson to commandeer the lead for the Beginners on his Honda or for Joe Berman to do likewise on his Yamaha in the First Day. a'I~III.1 DISPLA Y ADVERTISING DEADLINE _ in YANNUYS CYCLE CARE PRODUCTS Open 7 days Men/Thurs.. 9-9 Fri. till 6, Sat. 7-5, Sun 7-2 14813 Oxnard St. 91401 FRELAN, INC. , (213) 997·7301 MONARCH PLASTIC FENDERS Ask your dealer for _ mounted Gary Cochell while Brad by Mike Capalite Smith (CZ) did the honors in the Open TRABUCO CANYON, CAL., Oct. 15, Amateur.
